Anyone used them? They are by far the cheapest quote for me as I want 100% loss of use- petplan quoted me over £1000! Has anyone claimed with them? Good/bad/indifferent?
I am currently in dispute with them - I had riders insurance with them last year before I bought a horse - sent them a letter not to renew the policy - (£68) and a charge appeared on my credit card for £88 - so I am not their biggest fan - would recommend NFU any day.
Hummmm...thanks Weezy, hadn't seen that post. Rethinking 100% LOU now! Never had it before - husband seemed to think we should get it so I've been looking at quotes.
I'm with them at the moment and have had *touch wood* no problems!
I had to claim a few years ago as my horse fractured his cheekbone and required lots of vet visits which soon mounted up and there was the possibility of an op so we notified them straight away. Had no problems with the claim, it went straight through, no arguements.
So on my experience with them i'd say they were ok, though i know a lot of people don't like them!!
Thing is with LOU is that it is a) difficult to prove b) Insurance companies could argue it IS worth some kind of job, even hacking, therefore it isnt 100% knackered and c) unless your horse is worth shed loads of money and doing a risky job you shouldnt really need it - but if it IS worth shed loads then the premiums will be huge and that will cripple YOU!
Personally I dont insure any of my horses for over £5k, I figure that if something DID happen to them I could pick something reasonable up for that (also you dont need a vets cert etc!)
Oooh, SSM I am having that problem too. Had full insurance last year and wrote them a letter when the renewal was up saying I didn't want it anymore. They took the money out of my account anyway. They have said the'll refund me, but 6 weeks later I'm still waiting for a cheque...

petplan quoted me something like that too! i'm going with KBIS was cheaper than NFU but with a good rep.
We use E&L, but we only insure for 3rd party, Death, theft and straying. Our horses did once run through the centre of Bath loose and someone tried to claim off us for damaging their car, E&L just dealt with it, - not that hard as where the car was parked the horses never actually went.
With E&L always pay by cheque, and when you cancel a policy cancel the Direct Debit first with your bank.
Madmare dont do it!! Their rep is appalling and I have no doubt that off the record your vet would say the same thing.
They are NOT specialists in horse insurance no matter what their adverts might say, they insure everything from boats to golf clubs and are chronic at paying up.
I would go for 60% LOU as you will never get the full 100% back anyway as most horses have some sort of residual value. I have found Pet Plan to be A1. They paid for all my horse's treatment including physio, and then paid the full 60% LOU. I would say either insure with a reputable company, or don't bother at all and put your premiums in an'emeregency' savings account
Looks like I'm going for NFU or Petplan at the moment, but still waiting to hear from KBIS. Bless you all for your brilliant advice. Thank goodness for HHO!
dont touch with very long barge pole. none of the vets i've worked with will take direct payment from them coz they never pay up - means you have to settle the bills direct and then claim the money back from them (if you can!). i'm with KBIS and have been for 5yrs and will be sticking with them - no probs there.
Petplan completly shafted us and I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. One of our horses unexpectedly died, we went out to the field and it was just dead. Petplan refused to pay, because even though they had taken our credit card details they hadn't processed the payment, so they decided the horse wasn't insured. It died about a month after we took the policy out, they couldn't give us a reason why they hadn't taken the payment, they just hadn't. So 1 dead horse and no insurance pay out - it was only insured for £1500 as well. We also had 6 horses on that policy.
When I had to claim they had a fire and lost all documents, 3 times i sent them in as they kept loosing them, it was a real muddle, went with them because at the time with buying horse, tack etc had to go with cheepest, but its true you get what you pay for. They did eventually pay out, but from next week I am with NFU
I've heard bad stories about them so wouldn't recommend them.
I've recently changed to NFU. Very good policy and good customer service.
Not keen on Petplan.
Insured with Equestrian Direct for many many years and they had been brilliant. Only reason I changed was because they introduced a percentage as a excess amount rather than a flat amount. Since they have changed they now offer a flat rate again, so will continue to insure my other horse with them.
My friend was with them, and when her horse damaged it's leg and ended up in hospital they were left with a huge bill, as they're 100% veterinary cover turned out not not cover a lot of things which are standard with other companies and you had to read some tiny tiny print to find it out. It was a big shock for them!
The trouble is you hear horro stories about every insurance. I know people who have had bad experiences with E&L, Petplan and NFU. But like i said E&L have been fine with me and the 1 claim i have made.
You just need to make sure you've read ALL the small print carefully.
It has also been recommended that you just take out 3rd party liability insurance and put what you would spend on insurance into a bank account for vets bills as insurance is becoming more complex. You just need to make sure you do put money in bank account and don't spend it on anything else!
Never had any dealings personally with E&L but every account I have heard of them over the years have been horror stories.
I use NFU and can't rate them highly enough. One of my eventer's broke his leg in the field a few years ago. I and my vet filled out claim forms, etc. Within a week I had a check arrive to cover reimbursement for disposal costs. The next week the claims investigator rang me to check all the facts were in order and I had my claim go through within the next few days. No hassle whatsoever.
I have had friend's deal with NFU as well and had to make some major claims and never once has there been a single problem.
I have claimed with E&L twice and both times it took me 10 months to get the money and they tried everything they could to get out of it. I really don't know how they carry on, you definately get what you pay for with them. I changed to AIMS they are really helpfull. I haven't had to claim with them yet but my friend has and she has an on going claim with them, they are really good, everytime she gets a vets bill they send her a cheque!
I have heard NFU are good too, aims was cheaper though when i rang round. But don't go near E&L!
