E&L

I was insured with them for years and although they took a long time to pay out (av 4/5 months per claim) they paid out every time.
They included a pay out of £2.5k after losing my horse with a broken leg and only being insured with them 2 months!
Then again with a different horse who had a breathing issue costing £600, a fractured knee totalling over 1k and a laminitis claim for over 2k!
However one vet I know won't deal with them at all and you have to pay up front and claim your money back and my vet pulled a face when I told him who I was with and advised that before he would treat for anything major would have to speak to them to ensure they will pay out!!!
I'm now with Petplan!!

I was with them and they paid up £750 for sarcoid treatment, promptly. The horse needed the same the following year and they tried to not pay but eventually, with lots of snotty letters from me, they did pay the lot. Their premiums are cheaper than other companies too and on my experience, I'm staying with them.

I am with them for my 19 year old mare as not many others with insure for all vets fees after 16. She recently had an op and they paid my full amount in vets fees, minus the 2week stabling costs at leahurst! But as I was over my limit anyway it didn't matter. Claim took 6 weeks to sort and no quibbles! I am just about to claim for further homeopathic treatments from a different pot of money, plus put in a new claim for a further diagnosis!! I'll let you all know how I get on!!

I've had E&L for years. When i've made a claim i've always rang them up after i have rang the vet first. Told them every little bit of info i can, kept them informed all the way, and they have ALWAYS settled with no problems. I have made some big over £2000 claims in the passed too. I know they have a bad reputation but i think if you keep them in the loop there ok with you.

Did you have him vetted when you bought him? If you did you could prove that he was not lame when you bought/insured him?

No as he was fairly reasonable to buy - and they didnt require vettings as he was insured for less than 5k I think it is that they require vettings for.

The only thing I can think that may help your case is if the old owner could provide a history printout to support his medical history.

If they have accepted your horse on cover without the need for a vet cert and your vet can confirm your horse was sound at inception and this injury only just started technically they can't reject as they cannot prove your horse wasn't sound. However, knowing how tricky E&L can be I wouldn't put it past them to argue it.

Even if it turned out to be a chronic condition, the chances are if he had it before inception he would've started showing signs during the 14 day window. That's why it's there, to pick up any pre-existing conditions

I've had two fairly large claims last year through E&L in the space of 6 months, the toal for both came to about £5k, one was for a fractured pedal bone, other was KS (all on the same horse) they paid out in full and quickly and have simply said (as I assumed I would be) that I am now not covered on any future claims on my horse's back or that specific foot.
My friend also recently had to have her horse put to sleep through an illness that was diagnosed - she got her vets bill settled and the full price of her horse that he was insured for.
I can't rate them enbough for the services they provided us, and my premiums haven't increased dramatically either.
