Ear cleaner

Poor Henry, he is not my biggest fan right now...

He has been shaking his head a little recently, not excessively and not pawing at his ears or anything but enough to make me think he has a little wax in there. So while he was lying on the sofa I just got him in a headlock and put some ear cleaner down there.

I think its safe to say he is not a fan of this process

He is now at the very far end of the sofa giving me suspicious looks as if I might be about to lunge at him again...

If it hasn't cleared by Wednesday I'll have to take him to the vets again

Ah well maybe the cheque from the last lot will have cleared by then...

Oh there are loads, Canaural, Audiclear, Surolan...vets gave us one last week called Opi-Eptic , it is used just once a week.

I use canaural and it works a treat (although the crud that comes out of the ears is a bit less than pleasant!

I use to use leo ear cleaner then my vet said just use vinegar & water (the vinegar you put on chips, not cleaning vinegar)

Pop some in give the lug a good squelshy rub, let them shake their heads & then cotton wool ball to clean out!

With mine I lure them in with a special treat (pigs ear) do the deed & then they get their reward!

Ahh you see I just jumped Henry and did it

Hopefully it will do the trick! I just used some ear cleaner from a pet shop, not sure what brand it is

Might try the vinegar next time though, what is the ratio please?

Stupid question coming up but am I meant to be cleaning Chloe's ears? She rubs her paws over her ears occasionally but I never knew why. Argh! xxxx

*looks furtively left and right then whispers* I don't think we cleaned Barney's out more than once a year...

If she is shaking her head a lot, or scratching at her ears a lot, she may have something in there - a grass seed, or a build of wax, say. You can also give them a good sniff, you will smell if there is anything nasty in there. When we cleaned Barney's, we gently wiped the underneath of his ear flap with cotton wool dipped in warm water and he never had any ear trouble. I believe spaniels can be prone to ear trouble though which is why I do Henry's every so often - they're just ear drops from a pet shop.

If she is just rubbing her ears occasionally personally I wouldn't worry too much as she probably just has an itch, or is having a wash (Barney used to wipe his paws over his face, it was so cute)! If it looks like they're bothering her, you might want to take further action, depending on how much they are bothering her.

That is just my personal opinion though!

50/50 water to vinegar.

Just a small amout as you would with normal ear cleaner.

I had this problem with Twig (GWP) last week and took her to the vet as her ear was a bit smelly. he said both were inflamed and gave me canaural drops. It cleared up in a day or so but I kept putting the drops in for about 4-5 days.
Vet said dogs with flappy down ears very prone to this sort of thing as the air doesn't get in enough, (he did say we could try a hairband to hold them back!) but he also said left untreated the inflammation can become permanent leading to all sorts of problems. I would say if there is any strange smell (Twig's was waxy) don't leave it.
