Aaarrgghh really struggling and even vet doesn't seem to know what to do.
Pippa is a GWP which are noted for problematic lugs.....long story but started in August when new pup arrived with earmites. Used canaural which appeared to work at first then her ears just got grottier and grottier. Cleaning with auraclens, no good, got some gentler stuff from vet (epi-otic), they looked in her ears and said they were just dirty. No infection and not even sore in the canals. No improvement. Vet had her in and sedated for another matter and deep cleaned her ears. Now they are both really swollen like haemotomas and she is constantly shaking her head and walking with it tilted.
Vet thinks it is reaction to all the stuff in them and now wants to leave alone for a while but my concern is that she is so miserable and if the swelling doesn't go down soon it will become permanent.
Thanks for reading and please can anyone offer any help at all?

apart from ear cleaner have you been given any other form of treatment for the ear mites and for the discharge coming from the ear canals? some dogs pick up a pseudomonas infection after an ear mite infection and this can be a b****r to sort. But it could also as your vet says be an issue with the fact the ears have been over cleaned (which is why they are asking you to leave them alone for a while) if she has got heamatomas they will need to be sorted seperately - hope this helps and she recovers soon

Thank you for your help. The vet says it isn't pseudomonas, I specifically asked as my friend's spinone had this.
Do you think the haemotomas should be drained? vet said not. problem is she is shaking her head all the time and it will keep recurring :-(

Have your vets actually swabbed the ears to check for infection including pseudomonas and looked at ear cytology to check for mites?

If she has aural haematomas then yes, I would consider having them drained - needle drainage is rarely successful but surgical drainage is often helpful.

If all else fails and your vet really isn't sure what to do ask them if referral to a veterinary dermatologist would be an option.

Hope this helps...

Thanks Karen, seeing the vet on Weds so will ask about swabs/drainage.
I did ask already but she felt there was no reason to swab.....I have recently changed to this vet as she was so very highly recommended.

Thank you. Tried Thornit as well.
I think the vet is coming to the conclusion it has been a reaction, I think originally to the canaural.
I asked about Eas-otic which is supposed to be the new best thing and has steroids but it has gentamicin in which we have already tried and she thinks she may be sensitive too.
Poor Pippa doodle dog, she's so miserable not helped by a damaged bone in her leg which she is on box rest for :-(

Oh bless her! My fella was put on Canaural and Surolan and developed an additional reaction to those *sigh*
Epi-otic was prescribed by the new vet (I lost the bap with our old practise, they were of the 'shrug' and 'it's one of those things' variety as regards his ears and skin and everything else..) and is the only thing he needs now, once every couple of weeks.
He reacts to high levels of protein in his food and pollen, he is also on two Piriton a day.

Teal gets like this after a few days on kibble. Switching him to raw cleared his ears within 2 weeks. I am not saying go raw but maybe look at the grain % in your food??

After swapping and changing between raw and kibble (had big problem with freezer and meeting supplier as working) I have come to the conclusion that it must be the grain in the Skinners Duck and Rice. And then if hes gone swimming then he normally gets a full blown infection. But again no infection even with swimming when on raw. ??

Thanks CC and Toffee....she is fed raw now, maybe it is too high protein but she's been on it a year now and this only started a month or so back. Also she was on orijen before which is also high protein. Guess we just wait and see what vitnery says on Wed when she goes for her laser treatment.
