Pup had been rubbing her ears on sunday and I noticed some dark brown 'dirt' inside them, so cleaned them gently. By monday she was tilting her head to one side so made an appointment at the vets for yesterday. He said she's an infection (which is apparently common?) and gave me some droplets for her ears and said just to wipe round the inside gently for the next few days and keep her out of the cold, ie no walks.

She'd been playing around the hay bales on saturday and sunday, is it possible this might have caused the infection? The hay I have is quite good quality but hay always has dust in it. She wasnt IN the hay, just around it whilst i was filling haynets.
Or could it be a follow on from her medicine etc whilst in the vets over new year? I know humans can get infections after illness?

Also is there anything else I can do to make it more comfy for her? she's favouring chewing things today, and obviously isnt in lots of pain as shes no issues with anyone touching her ears, but if theres anything I can be doing, I'd rather be doing it. I asked the vet re pain relief but he said she didnt need it.

Ear infections are very common in dogs, I wouldn't panic overly. Don't try and 'dung out' the ears every day - put whatever you have been given in the ear and let her shake it out. Rubbing and putting things like cotton wool, gauze or tissue down there all the time can make it worse.

Bear in mind chewing with the bottom jaw can work the muscles around the ears but if she is not in pain I wouldn't worry too much.

Thankyou, the vet said just wiping round the bits I can see with warm water and cotton wool pads and said definately no sticking cotton buds in!
