Ear mites- is it worth getting the vet?

The past week or so my horse has become really headshy again, he was very nervous when I got him a few years ago but is a thousand times better now, well he has been!
When I was grooming him today I noticed a tiny bit of blood on a bit of hair in his ear. Taking a closer look it looks like he has ear mites or something similar (don't really know much about ear mites and such!). There were a few mites or bugs or something but couldn't see any more blood.

Is it best to call the vet out or is it something that can be sorted by buying something from a tack shop? Thanks :-)

Here in the New Forest our ponies often have blood in their ears from revolting flies that make a bee line inside the ear. We put in Summer Fly Cream, a bright yellow cream intended for fly strike. It would be best to check it out with your vet first though as you might have something totally different. Good luck. :)

I think if you havent tried to sort it out and its causing distress ie headshy then I would as i would want it nipped in the bud with something nice and strong and a check its nothing else. (I am not one for calling a vet but would do so this time). Its nearly the weekend so better get on the blower Friday or you may get charged more. Dont leave it. Good luck.
