Every farrier, delivery driver or workman that ever comes onto the yard likes to warn me that Ped is very desirable to *mobile home dwelling people* and it's making me paranoid. Being the top guard dog that he is he always goes out to the gate to meet people coming in and would happily jump inside anyone's van. As he wanders about loose on the yard all day it could be quite a while before I realise he's gone and it really would be my worst nightmare.

He's microchipped and had his boy bits off but he's a dab hand with rabbits and I know they use lurchers as bait for dog fighting

so they're not stolen just to breed.

I really wanted to get him tattooed when he had the snip but the vet's receptionist thought I was mad and said it was unnecessary.

So how would I go about finding someone who does it, roughly how much does it cost and is there a central database the numbers are registered to?

And try and find a person local to you. The guy who runs the boarding kennel I use does it.

Beware though, if someone wants a dog bad enough or doesn't want to be traced, it has been known for dogs to have ears removed

All of ours are chipped, tattooed and DNA tested - it is par for the course for us and would not think twice about it.
All of ours have had it done when pups so can't help with price.

Thank you very much for that. I've emailed someome near home so hopefully I can get it done when we go back at easter.

I have had adults tattoed (when it first started, now they are all done at 8 weeks) and they didn't make too much fuss. Tbh the bit they disliked most was the fact they had to be held in a firm grip.

They can also tattoo sort of on the inside of the thigh towards the belly, don't know if it is officially actually called a thigh on dogs (I always refer to it as thighs on mine, never thought about if it is correct or not before) but you hopefully understand what area on the dog that I'm thinking about. In Sweden it was sometimes done on dogs with natural (standing) ears, were the owners/breeders either didn't want to risk that the tattooing made the ear become a drop ear (rare but I've heard that it could happen) or they did not want to risk disturbing the aesthetical impression on a future judge by having a visible number+letter in one ear.
If you talk to the person doing the tattooing nicely, maybe he could be tattooed both in the ear and in the thigh/belly area? Then post a sign stating that he is tattooed on the inside of his leg/belly in case of being stolen. Hopefully it would be less likely that they would want to remove both an ear and a leg?

Or how about tattooing both ears? One of my late old cats ended up being tattooed in both her ears because the first one didn't take that well.

They just cut off both ears FL

Greyhounds are often dumped like this so their moronic owners cannot be traced

The leg sounds to be a good option

I've just realised that a better description than thigh/belly is that the tattoo should be in the groin (sometimes my elevator obviously doesn't go all the way up to the top floor

), in any case, it is where the fur is less dense, which makes the tattoo visible.

No MurphysMinder, read my new reply above (I hope that makes more sense

), in the groin there is an area of sort of just skin, there the sort of tattoo clamp is fitted with one part of the clamp on each side of the groin.

ETA : The tattoo should be on the inside of the groin.
