Ear veils in eventing dressage?

Ear Covers / Protective Fly Hoods are permitted and may provide noise reduction. However, these will be systematically checked by Stewards at the end of the test to ensure that nothing prohibited has been added (i.e. special material) or is covered by the fly hoods. The fly hoods should be discreet and should not cover the Horses’ eyes.

This is from the BE rule book

Ah great thank you!!

I've misplaced my rule book. I discovered by coincidence that my mare is much more settled and less spooky wearing one but wasn't sure if it was allowed :)

Check very very carefully about the thickness. There was a well documented incident last year of a top rider (honestly can't remember the name) but he was eliminated in dressage at a 2* as his horse had a veil that was deemed to be too thick. Even worse, was that the same horse had been wearing the same flymask all season.

It was lined with neoprene and under FEI rules that wasn't allowed. They seldom get taken off at BE to be checked. It is debatable whether they are now allowed as the wording has changed.

Arena, could we have an update of your mare? - i used to love following your posts with squirrel!

Awwww that's lovely thank you!
I will get to it 😃 Squirrel is still on the scene too - 18 but but still thinks he's 10! Just didn't really have anyone to take photos last season and reports get a bit dull to write without them.

Thanks guys, will double check new ruling and do some more research. The one I've used with her so far are just the bog standard ones you can get anywhere

ah thanks for that - that part was never explained, and it would seem that the rider had genuinely been caught out, his comments were around the thickness, not that it had neoprene in it.

Mind you, it wouldn't have occurred to me either that that was not allowed! assuming the veil had been bought with the neoprene inside.

Mine used to wear one BE dressage- perfectly fine. He would get quite irritated by flies so it helped keep them from around his eyes. (a little anyway).
