Noticed today that my horse had a little, white, flakey kind of growth in his inner right ear, about the size of a 5p coin, maybe a bit smaller. He also had a few raised lumps from fly bites on his neck so 'tis the season again, and I've heard of something called aural plaques being spread by a certain type of fly? Something about the virus being transmitted by their bite, and then causing these warts/plaques to develop in the ears. It doesn't seem to be bothering my horse at all and he was perfectly happy to let me prod about at it, as he's very good with his ears.

I've never come across this before and anxious it will spread or that he'll get more of them, as apparently they can't really be gotten rid of. Is there anything I can do to prevent this happening and should I be worried??

Just leave them alone..they can get sore if you play about with them and there isn't any treatment. One of ours had huge plaques a few years ago but we left them alone and they are hardly noticeable now.

Personally I would not touch them. Mine has them, as well as a lot of sarcoids. Apparently they are transmitted to the horse by flies, but a different specie to the one that transfers the bovine papilloma virus that results in sarcoid, hence they react differently. They are treated in some countries, but I believe not particularly successfully. My youngster's dam also had them all her life and they caused no problems at all.

Mine had a funny thing like that on the tip of his ear a few years ago but it seems to have gone now. I left it alone as it wasn't bothering him. He also had one on his face not far from his eye for which I called the vet, who shrugged and said as he's grey he'll be prone to these things. It was recorded on his record and his insurance then excluded all skin conditions! SO don't get the vet out just yet. It was just a similar funny fly bitey thing and went after a couple of moults.
