This is a question for those of you on DIY livery yards…. Do you have any rules regarding the hours that at you can access and do things with your own horses? And at what time would you consider early access to be too early eg 6 am/7 am etc…..

Just interested to know peoples thoughts and how people deal with such rules?

My old part DIY yard I could have rocked up at 3am and had no issue. My current full livery yard the owner lives on site - and has an electric gate! If I let her know the day before she'd let me in from probably about 5am onwards, but the yard officially opens at 8.

It's one of the questions I ask viewing! One DIY yard I looked at didn't want access before 7.30am or after 7.30 pm ... !

Our yard is pretty relaxed. A few of us are there from 6.30am onwards but I'm often there at 5.45/6am if doing a longer ride before work.

The YM.does ask everyone to be off by 9pm in winter and 9.30pm in the summer.

Access before or after that time is always fine by arrangement - I've had to do later checks at night and a few people come home from shows is never an issue

Thanks all who have replied so far, what’s happened is YO has now said to me that I can’t go up before 7.30 on a weekend due to her ex living in a caravan on the yard and apparently my 6.30 starts are waking him up and he’s complained! This is the latest in a bit of a laundry list of things which are really frustrating me and I just wanted to check whether others thought this was unreasonable also. Sometime especially in the summer I just want to get jobs done and pony in/out and get back in order before my kids get up.

My yard rules are not before 5.45am and after 9 pm unless otherwise organised or sick horse etc. I doubt my YO would hear me if i was earlier, which I have been on quite a few occasions. What were the yard times originally?

I don’t think people should do their horses in enclosed barns at silly o clock there was a woman who used to do this at a yard I was at and she’d feed everything at 3am regularly! Yard owner told her to just feed her own if that early but neither was a good solution. Horses being disturbed at night. Not ideal! Glad I don’t have to do earlies anymore!

Well they seem to be moving target which is infuriating me. In the winter she also has a rule of no one handling horses in the yard in the dark!! Last half of the winter mine had to live out as being at work 8.30 -4.30 meant that I pretty much couldn’t do anything but this winter he’ll need to be stabled as he’ll still be recovering from his surgery. I am tentatively looking again to move
