Early Stage Renal Problems

Hi All,

I have an 8 year old working cocker, generally fit and chirpy, who has seemed fractionally off lately. I took her in for a check up and decided to have a full blood panel run as there was nothing obviously wrong, and it's come up with a flag on a new test that indicates early stage renal problems. It's a fairly borderline result, and she is not in renal failure, but the vet and I would like to take action now. She's suggested putting A on a low phosphorus diet, which the vet nutritionist said meant ditching raw food and using Hill's Wd. The ingredients list on that concerns me (very grain heavy). Does anyone have experience of this and a preferable alternative? I'll use it if it's the best option for her, but I want to be sure.

Thanks :-)

Nutriment do a low phosphorous raw food

ETA: Why the weight reduction food from Hills vs their kidney diet I wonder? Low phosphorous is very doable on raw but requires a bit more thought

Hi. Thanks for the link. The Wd is something to do with A being a breed prone to pancreatitis and the Kd being potentially able to trigger that. She also has high cholesterol. She's not overweight. Apologies for not being more specific. My vet was very clear when she spoke to me, but I'm a tad stressed and not remembering the conversation very well.

ETA: any advice on raw for this? The vet nutritionist was very anti and my own ventures haven’t got beyond Nature's Menu pre-balanced cans!

I have to say while experimenting with diets with healthy dogs is fine, with ill dogs I would most definitely be running any home made diet ideas past a veterinary nutritionist for a dog with kidney trouble to avoid making things worse.

Oh, absolutely, Susie T. I should have said anything I do will be in consultation with the vet and vet nutritionist. Keeping her as healthy and happy as possible is my only priority. I'm looking for options to discuss with them.

Talk to them about the low phosphorous and taurine food from nutriment and discuss what level of phosphorous they want her to be having. Don't feel pushed into feeding Hills if it's not what you want or feel is best for the dog.

The WD vs KD makes sense if they're worried about Pancreatitis - WD has 8% fat vs 17% in the KD
