Earnings do not equal Outgoings

Not having a go at anyone or agreeing/disagreeing with anyone but:

I say I have no money, but I have my horse, so I have money, I just choose to spend it all as soon as it comes in

. It annoys me when people say they're broke, then book a two week holiday and ask if £1000 spending money is enough, and should they maybe get more!!!

I dream of how many rugs/numnahs.tack etc I could buy with that money and chuckle to myself

Im very broke. Got made redundant in February, I was struggling before that because I live alone, have a mortgage and have had tons of things break in the last 9 years so my debt has gone through the roof, got nobody to bail me out or lend me any. So I got a bit of redundancy and found a job, great. But then my cam belt went while driving to Cornwall for a few days away on a Sun holiday, had to abandon the car, hire something to get home to Birmingham and use my redundancy to get another. That was early June. This morning some numpty wrote off the "new" one by driving into me, its only an R reg diesel with 120k on the clock so.... fantastic, I should have a nice tidy £200 to spend on a replacement! Plus I've taken a £300 a month drop in wages so my bills exceed my salary! Its not the horse, I work at the yard all weekend and that covers my livery, its life for me. Or rather total bloomin lack of it.

Because if the situation ends up with horses suffering, then surely it should be a cause for concern?

I do know people who can't afford to feed their horses properly during the winter, but then come summer when costs are so much lower, they then go out and buy another one, when they just won't have the finances to care for them properly when winter comes.

Yes, or forsake their own children's welfare so they can keep their horses (yes, plural) and not even keep them properly.

I admit I'll struggle come winter, but if worst comes to worst I will go without things for me before my horse goes without (we've made some massive cuts already, but I'm not the sort of person who gets pleasure out of buying clothes, or going out for meals so I'm easy to please really, and don't feel like I'm going without). I have just taken a horse onto full loan with a view to buy (specifically so that we could see how manage the financial side before committing to buying) and this will be my first winter, which means bigger livery bills as I'll be getting hay and shavings too. I put a little away each month but have just spent it in the sale at Horseworld so have nothing put away, I don't have her insured as she's a veteran and I'd rather put the money away then I can use it for any bills, not just external injuries like insurance would. If it comes to vet bills, I would gladly borrow off a family member and pay them back over time if it was either that or pts. I couldn't forgive myself if I had to pts purely for financial reasons.

Yes it is the horse. Because if you did not work for livery you could either get a job elsewhere in that time and use the money to cover debts bills, OR the yard would pay in cash not in kind.

To the OP - I dunno really, I agree with you, if you can cover all your bills etc then you're not broke, you simply choose to spend your disposable cash on your horse, which is fair enough really, it's what I do. As for people who get into debt to keep their horses, I think that is barking mad - I got made redundant (but had well over 3 months salary saved up as I know I work in a seasonal industry where it was inevitable eventually), I didn't get a horse until I had mortgage sorted (as in got one and could pay it and then afford the horse), and if it had come to getting in debt to keep the horse, then the lorry would have gone first, swiftly followed by the horse if necessary and if I couldn't get a job to cover the shortfall. I would never, ever get in debt to keep a horse, horses are well and truly luxury items in my book (as is anything which you don't need in order to live). I am not judging people who do the opposite, but I really, really don't understand why you'd do it......

Financial circumstances can change very swiftly. I managed to buy my first ever horse at 41 through unexpectedly making money on a flat I sold. 7 years down the line after 5 years of happy and comfortably affordable horse ownership I lost my job earlier this year. 6 months later I still have no new job and redundancy pay ekeing away. I find it hard when I hear other horse owners I know droning on and on about no money and sometimes not even getting their horses feet seen to when they should or bothering to spend money worming them and spot same crew driving off in huge gaz guzzling 4x4s that never tow, smoking furiously and regaling us all with how many nights blind drunk they spend in clubs! They're not broke they just choose to spend the money on themselves rather than cover the basic needs of their horses. Makes me sound a bit yah boo sucks I know but my horse remains well shod, wormed, etc and will do so whatever changes I have to make in my new much reduced lifestyle! I am a nice person really, just having a bad anxious day about the future!
