ears back when happy??????????????

I am now so confused!!!
I have had my cob nearly a year now and though i loved him and we got on I never felt "special " to him.
Today that changed - when i turned him out he toddled off for a drink and as usual i stood outside his gate just watching.
Unusually he came straight back to me - i stroked him and he started to lick me and it ended up like a mutual grooming session - was beautiful. He was so gentle, even nuzzled my face so so gently.
He ended up half asleep lol - his head right down onto my arm and his eyes shutting, back hoof cocked - totally chilled and relaxed.
I stayed for ages - just stroking and scratching him and i swear he went to sleep!
I was so happy - he has never ever done this in the year ive had him, i have never ever seen him so relaxed with me!
But, im very confused because his ears were back - I thought this was a sign of anger????
He most definiteley was not angry - when i had to leave he kicked the gate and stood there watching me walk down the whole length of the long lane!
Can anyone explain this to me because its really really confused me xxx
 
If my filly Emma is not looking at something or angry or anything her ears are always back, not flat back angrily but just kind of pointing backwards, girl ar my yard said at first it was a puzzled expression but they are like that the majority of the time so guessing it is just her natural comfortable way to hold her ears, we just call them her devil ears now :)
 
My horse rests his ears back like that when hes eating, and hes not angry about that at all :D I think of these ears as indifferent, when hes relaxed and not too bothered about anything

I've seen his ears flat back 'angrily' when he pushes horses out the way to get to me with my apples :D
To me, forward ears are more about being alert and aware of things than happy so although I love his ears going forwards when I bring him in and first see him, when grooming him I like it when he relaxes them :)


Your horse sounds lovely and I know what you mean about feeling 'special'. I've had mine for about 4/5 months and only had a handful of them moments when we've really clicked :D.
