I've just fitted a battery powered energizer to one of our paddocks, nice machine & powered by a car battery. I did this years ago at another yard & I had a galvanised ground spike for the earth. I tried to find it but can't so had to find another earthing spike. I decided to buy a meter length of zinc plated threaded rod to use. I banged the rod into the ground & connected everything up & hey presto it's working a treat. So, if anyone needs a ground spike for an electric fence these really work & are generally cheaper than specific spikes.

I use metal ground spikes that got left behind after a village event a decade ago - they were used to put up car parking tape, and somehow ended up with me along with a load of electric fence posts I had lent the event. They are about 4 ft long, and on our clay ground I can get them all the way in. Not galvanised but they do the job and last for ever. Reinforcing rods cut to size are also an option and sometimes free if you ask around.

Anything metal and conductive gets repurposed for this by me 😅😅 I was quite proud of myself fence wackering in a meter of rod, and the fence really packs a punch now! It’s quite handy having your other half on building sites if they can get you lengths of mental do this sort of thing! Just need a flag or something for when it’s not in use 😇
