Easy to wash under-rug, that doesn't rub or slip back?

I am looking for a good light rug to put underneath my horse's heavier rugs, to act as another layer and also to keep them clean as it will be easier to wash and dry than their heavy rugs. Ideally a combo neck but would have to be one that doesn't rub manes or slip down.

I hate fleeces used as under-rugs, so no fleeces please! I find they always pull back and tight on the shoulders. Price not an issue as long as it lasts, but lower cost is always better!

Thanks :)

The 100g horseware liners are brilliant, really easy to wash, stay put even without using the velcro tabs round the neck (clip onto fillet string Ds at the back) and they dry really fast too.

I don't think they make them with a neck tough. i've noticed that Masta are making combo liners:

never seen one in the flesh though.

In the old days I used to use a cotton summer sheet. Nowadays I use the Rambo Duo and PE Trio rugs with the detachable liners.

agree with the horseware suggestion - we use some amigo insulators which are small/thin enough to regularly bung in the washing machine.

Horseware and PE liners are both great. I think the PE liners are maybe slightly longer lasting than the Horseware, but the Horseware are generally slightly cheaper. PE do also do (or did last time I had looked and I have 2 at home) a liner with a full neck. TBH the full neck liners were too much for my horses, even in the depths of winter - they were also deeper in the body than the TO rugs, so the bottom corners at the back would end up getting caked in mud

Another vote for the Amigo Insulator liners - they are really light, small enough to pop in the washing machine, and they have a nylon lining that doesn't rub or soak up mud and wet. The nylon lining also seems to keep them shinier than cotton sheets or fleeces. The insulators don't pull back like fleeces, and stay in place really well.

Amigo mio liner / thin rug wash and dry in three hours if you have a warm room fit well and don't slip.
Last years are on offer on eBay ATM I got some last night.

I noticed yesterday that Shires are now making liners and they are much cheaper than other brands

If the extra layer doesn't have to be warm then I really recommend the Snuggy Hood petticoat rugs, they dry so quickly but are essentially a layer of shiny material so wont add much warmth if any

Well fitting summer sheets are my port of call, easy to wash at home and can change weekly.
Ironically its the cheaper brands that make the better cotton drill ones, currently i have a rhinegold one that not only is good thick cotton, has elastic cross surcingles and leg straps.
Only thing is its light blue- but just wash regularly!

I loved the idea of the snuggy hoods petticoat rug, but I just didn't get on with it. I DID find that it slipped backwards and strangled my horse's front which was a real shame, as I agree, the concept is *perfect*. ( I use bossys bibs all winter and they are fab)

That's a shame,I was about to buy one of these but not sure now! I hate stuff slipping back. I agree with everyone else though about liners,I'm a complete convert to the horseware system, so easy to use & as a fanatical rug washer they suit me as the liners wash & dry so well. I often forget to attach the front liner tabs to the rug & never had any problems which does make me wonder if they would sit well & be fine under other makes of rug.

other people obviously get on with them so don't let it be the deciding factor! ;) I really, really wanted it to work but I sold it in the end :o

I find the bit that gets dirtiest is around the shoulders and over the mane anyway, so a shoulder bib takes care of that easily. I have bossys bib ones just because the sizing works for me. Keeping a clean bib on underneath the rugs extends the period between rug washes IME...Then the liners can be washed when necessary :)

I'm with you MP, I have given up on my petticoat as well, madam did not appreciate being strangled over night. Any body want one ? 6ft 9 and free to anyone who'l pay postage...

I use them under stable rugs as the cob is a filthy grease machine no matter how much I wash/brush him. I find they keep him clean and his coat shiny, and they wash and dry almost straight away. Get a size bigger than usual though if your in doubt. Mine needs one a size and a half bigger as hes such a big lump!

Its never slipped back either. It has an attachment that threads through the front buckles of the normal rug, so you could always do that if it did.

If anyone has a 6ft3 they dont want let me know as I'd love another one :)

Another who uses the Horseware rugs combined with the liners, absolutely brilliant. I have several different weights and so easy to pop in the wash.

If you can get your hands on one, you could see if they might fit on your existing rugs.

Ooh very helpful thanks everyone! I'll buy some different ones and see which I get on with best, I suppose different shapes will suit the different horses anyway. I'll have a re-read and start googling :) thanks everyone!

Me! I also loved the concept, but it throttled my horse. It's only been on a horse about twenty minutes in total. Would love to rehome it.

I've been thinking about th Lycra full body as an under rug.

I got a premier equine liner last year to use with either of my PE rugs and found it very disappointing. Nice looking rug but just slipped back despite the fixings, pulled really tight across horses chest.
Any good ideas of how to stop it doing so??

Amigo Insulator rugs are fab. Easy to pop in the washing machine and silky shoulders so no rubbing. Also have attachments for neck cover and don't cost the earth.

Big yes please if its still available. Mine is almost living in his snuggy hood and I have been looking very hard at the petticoat..Fingers crossed!!

Another one that's given up on the petticoat, just wouldn't stay in place, shame because could be the perfect solution.

Me too and I bought one for my 16hh and my 12.2. Just glad the shetland isn't rugged ☺️ I had to cut the elastic at the back and add another section as it was very tight and ended up high up under their tails. It also slipped back and to the side 😑. But they are so light and easy to wash and dry that I'm going to see if I can attach them to the inside of my rug somehow. At £50 each i really need to work something out!
