Eating at Horse Shows?

I think tomato soup definitely caters for a wide variety of tastes and preferences - will be popular with veggies and kids too I should think.

Glad to hear you are having some decent veggie food - my daughter and I often end up just eating chips at some venues due to lack of veggie choices.

There was a lovely catering van at our agricultural show at the weekend which had some fab choices - breakfast omelettes, hot pitta bread with hummus dip, tortilla wraps with range of fillings, salad boxes, jacket potatoes etc! Made a great change from all the burgers and normal cr*p!

you can't have a burger without onions!!!!!

if I've had a sh!tty day competing I love to scoff a burger with extra onions and it always makes me feel better

Our stand was near the 'refreshments' at Badminton one year and there was one van doing all sorts of salads and you could just take what you wanted (limited by the size of the container you were given

. And there was someone supervising so the greedy ones couldnt return without paying more ! They did a cracking trade! They had big bowls of salads and people served themselves. They also had lots of organic stuff and rare breed sausages and burgers. They charged more than anyone else but had the biggest queue. We ate there every day and it was a lovely change from the greasy 'wholesale' burgers and sausages.

Yes I do like onions though!

And sorry I would like either parsnip soup or tomato soup (not too keen on 'country vegetable' as it always makes me think of those cheap tins of horrible soup with the cubed vegetables type of thing. Even if it wasnt I probably wouldnt risk buying it to find out.

No onions here please! Me and my little sister wouldn't touch them!

I would love it if some of the vans around here did soup. Personally I would go with a veg and a meat option - it's nice to have choice. I'd choose tomato and chicken noodle over chicken. If your planning to go to shows with a lot of kiddies it can be worth remembering that smooth tomato soup tends to be more popular with them than vegetable, purely because of the name of the latter.

I'd personally avoid spicy soups however - again cause of kids.

i personally would choose tomato as its the only soup i like
at a show i tend to have bacon and egg baps lol

i think soup would sell and i dont really think the flavour will matter as long as its a fairly normal flavour...

i've seen vans at shows that list cheese, onions extra egg prices individually as extras so u can have it with watever u want i think this is a good idea

My riding club has a little kitchen in the indoor school and offers food at events I often get roped into helping out. The best seller in the winter has to be curry (one chicken, one veg and both fairly mild) We always sell out of it while there's always plenty of soup left no matter what the flavour. You can make it in advance and just keep it warm on a stove or hotplate if you have one - serve it with a naan bread that can be kept warm in an oven or rice if you have a hot plate.

Paninis also go down well if you have one of those griddle machine things and they're really easy to make.

I'm not a fan of burgers or hotdogs and I hate onions but you have to offer the choice no matter what they order, my OH likes them on a bacon sarnie (but he's weird). It's no skin off your nose even if they put them in their soup!

Homemade cakes are always a good seller as well, particularly with specatators who will eat them with a coffee.

Out of the two it would have to be tomato (sorry) other than that I would have gone for vegetable. Sounds a great idea I'm always fed up at shows that I can only have sweet stuff or toast as there are no veggie options.

I wouldn't buy chicken soup, only tomato. And as others have said, you are catering for both veggies and carnivores then.

and I want onions on my burger please, as well as a plastic cheese slice!

Another vote for a veggie soup. That said, am on a budget so normally take our own food but at a very wet windy motor racing rally last year which we had chanced upon so had no food with us was really nice to be able to get a mug of soup and a roll to warm the cockles of one's heart. We still remember it as it was so unlike food at most horse shows. I think they also did baguettes of the pick and mix variety on the salad front. Don't know who they were but they wouldn't be immediate competition for you as was in Devon! Good luck with the new venture.

I'd love our show grounds to do salads and baguettes, i cant stand the burgers and chips at shows, YUK.

I would go for chicken or cheese and onion soup!

Good luck with your new venture BTW.
I think you'll be popular

Out of those two I'd prefer chicken as long as it's homemade! Though my ideal soup would be butternut squash with chilli or ginger - really tasty, filling, seasonal for winter and cheap :-)

as much as I dislike cheese there's something about a plastic cheese slice on a burger I can't resist

leek and potato soup was a winner at a local show last winter

Well if you go for chicken you cut out the veggies. TBH i'm so glad of a hot veggie food when i'm at a show etc that i've even slumped to the lows of onion soup, which really is just hot onions in water. And i hate onions. So would be grateful of any veggie soup.

I would go for tomato personally. Best with cheese butties

ETA as post above leek and potato = winner! I don't know anyone who doesn't like that. Fact.

Tomato, it is the most popular flavour! And it means you don't alienate the veggies, and there seem to be more in the horse world compared to the normal population.

I would also do some onions for burgers, people might also want them on the baguettes, and they are super easy to do ahead of time, and cheap as well.

Thanks everyone for all your responses. We are naturally going to be limited as to what we can carry on the trailer and in the car due to space, but we do have an additional two electric sockets in the trailer so could always plug in a toaster, mini-oven or microwave if wanted to add something else. For the moment, the menu as we have it on the website will get us going, and we can hopefully learn along the way exactly what people want at different venues.

If you see us about at any venues (or can offer us any bookings around our area) do come up and say hello to us. Thanks to you all.

Sorry - a bit late with my post but, don't laugh, I have the most delicious recipe for courgette soup (it can be served hot or cold!). Courgettes are plentiful and reasonably cheap and you can always freeze the soup.

If you would like the recipe, please pm me. I am not joking when I say that EVERYONE who has tasted it has said it was totally delicious.

*whispers* no one could tell, when asked, what kind of soup it was!
