I had my horse on straw years ago but she got far too fat from eating it so has been on shavings ever since. Have just moved her to a new yard and she is on straw again, any ideas on what I can spray on it to stop her nibbling!?! Tried jeyes fluid in the past but perhas I didn't make it strong enough, worried I'll end up poisoning her though. any ideas/tips most appreciated

Thanks

They used to use jeyes fluid at a riding school I did my YTS at. I would be worried that the fluid would irritate the skin or get into an eye.

There is a solution to stop crib bitters, maybe spraying that around would help and be less toxic?

The best option would be to put her back onto shavings again if you could.

Agree -back to shaving, I don't like the idea of spraying chemicals on something your horse may decide to eat... one of our mares eats her bedding, so she's been on shavings which obviously she didn't eat - only she's really really messy ( worst I've EVER seen!) so now she's on rubber matting with a fairly thinish bed and a fat haynet, she never eats the bed now.

When you muck out keep a fork full of wet straw (wee) and when you have laid your bed, just sprinkle it all over the top just enough so when they put there head down to take a mouthful they smell wee and dont touch it, but not to much so it makes your bed look and smell dirty.

Its a much safer way to stop them rather than using different disinfectants (sp?) etc etc.

Jed always ate his bed and this worked a treat.
