Have got a 10 day course of bute to give my lame horse, fine but the fussy mare will not touch her feed. I have tried hiding it in an apple, mixing with apple sauce, putting pepermint flavouring in her feed and she refuses all of it

Help, Ideas pleeeeeese....

Thanks

I put mine in a syringe with a tiny bit of PeptoBismal - shake it around to mix the bute in properly and then stick it in horses mouth as you would do for worming. Always works and they all appear to love the taste of the original flavour....they don't like the mint Pepto though.....at least mine don't.

You could make bute biscuits? Not sure whether it would still work properly though....

Ooooo cant blame her really, it tastes nasty

If all else fails, mix bute in a little water and put in syringe and give orally, exactly the same as you would a wormer.

Sorry to hear she's lame. Good luck

Thanks, going to give the syringe thing a try tonight, have tried cutting open all types of fruit and veg and hiding inside but she spits it out !

Thanks again

Would the PeptoBismol affect the bute absorbtion in any way? Our lad has Acidex (same active ingredients as PeptoBismol) and vets advised to withdraw it on the day of worming and as he's on anti-b's currently to feed them at least 12hours apart. Are they just being cautious?

I've no idea but not according to my vet. It was him who told me about putting bute into Pepto - I'd never even though of using it as a vehicle before.

Second the jam sandwich thing - I had a horse on loan a while ago that wouldn't take any sort of additive or medicine in his feed so there was always a loaf of bread, a knife and a pot of cheap jam in our tackroom!!

Golden Syrup sandwiches! squirt the syrup in, mix the bute to it and close sandwich.

Voila! Horse will love it!

I use peppermint coordial mix with bute to make a paste & then scrape out with chaff & feed. All eat it up so far!!

Mix the bute in the horses hard feed. This works if the horse has quite a few scoops of the hard feed as then the horse can't really taste it, whereas if you only feed a tiny hard feed the horse will refuse it!

molasses is the best think it sticks the feed and the bute together and removes the taste barely any horses refuse it, give that a go its well recommended!

I've found the best thing is to mix the bute with some natural yoghurt (as its thicker than water so wont leak everywhere) and a few drops of peppermint oil and given it in a worming syringe. At least then you can be sure they have had the full dose!

I'll be trying the jam sandwich trick next time I need to give my girl some tablets. We get in a terrible mess with the syringe, golden syrup and icing sugar mixture, I get more over me than I get down her throat

I mix mine with instant hot chocolate mix and then put it in an irrigation syringe. Also keep it in the freezer if it's going in feed. The jam sarnie doesn't work with the big girl she spat it back at my sister! Another one (again heavy horse) spat hers in the water bucket so didn't get that given back

Thanks so much for all of your ideas, Tried the bute in a syringe this morning and she spat most of it back out all over me, will put bute in fridge and give the jam thing a try next...

Thanks
