I brought my little pony a likit thing, and he has eaten it in a night!

I know this is probably a bit of stupid question, but he will be OK wont he

Is there anyway i can stop him demolishing it and making it last a few days at least!?

He obviously doesn't realise how expensive they are!

One night?!

Mine can devour one in 10 minutes!!!!
I dont think they can cause any damage, because they are made to desolve when wet, so theoretically there shouldnt be any nasty blockages!
Unfortantly i don't know of any tips too make them last longer, would love too know if any one does tho!!

I am sure he will be fine on this occasion, I wouldn't give him any more though have never actually looked whats in them.

There were some fab pics of fluorescent blue lickit slobber from one of the clydie owners a while back when it went in one go.

Mine manages them in 10 minutes too. She's only allowed one on her birthday and one at christmas - never any other times as they're a bit like crack for horses, just made of sugary rubbish.

They do a plain salt ('sport') one that you could try.

Pure glucose is what is in them. Needless to say, my poor deprived horses are never fed these

Tia- thats what I suspected TBH!

will stick to a plain salt lick and the occasionaly swede and giant parsnip

same, much prefer the pure salt licks in the same shape as likits and the ponies love them

I managed to make a likit sized hole in a swede at the weekend with an apple corer, perfect fit in the likit holder. My TB didn't show any interest in his mint likit for about 2 weeks, then suddenly discovered it and it lasted 1 night. He gets 1 a week now and then has to make do with a swede or an apple.

Hi. mine was completely gone within a night too. I looked at the content and they contain alot of vitamins and different nutrients.. I was slightly worried like you but he was fine so I don't think there is anything too bad with it.

Yup, 5 -10 mins is the record here! that hanging in the middle of the stable, no walls anywhere near, she just has the knack. Only gets them on very special occasions.

Her fav is pink ones

I don't buy them anymore because they are just horsey sweets as far as mine are concerned. They love them, but thats not really the point. Both are usually on the fat side anyway and these are the last things they need. They have to make do with salt licks instead...

I work for the manufacturers of Likits and I troll through these websites for product feedback etc. I came across this page and thought I should clear up a few issues.

Yes Likits are made from glucose but contrary to popular belief sugar is not bad for your horse in fact they eat it every day in the grass and hay that they consume. The amount of sugar in one Little Likit (250g) is equivalent to that of 2 hrs grazing.

Licking encourages the horse to salivate, which is cruicial to gut health, particularly when they have limited access to grazing. It also washes away any residue of the glucose from the teeth so actually works in a similar way to a tooth brush.

Making Likits last longer - firstly I would ask you to ensure that your toys are hung correctly. If you have a Likit Holder or Boredom Breaker then it should be hung at least 1 meter from any walls & at wither/eye level, otherwise the horse will be able to bite rather than lick.

The Boredom Breaker is by far the most challenging of all the toys, use with just 1 Little Likit at a time and have one of the salt licks on the top section, either a Likit Ice, Likit Salt or Likit Sport. I am sure that consumption time will increase.

If you have a Tongue Twister, again make sure it is positioned correctly, at eye/wither height for the horse and try using just 1 Little Likit at a time, this will increase the challenge level for your horse as gravity will always make the Little Likit spin to the bottom of the ball.

The recommended level of consumption per horse per day is between 100-300g per head on average. A Little Likit weighs 250g so should your horse consume the whole lot in one day then it is not an issue, except for your pocket. If your horse consumes more than 300g then don't worry, just don't give him/her one the next day.

If anyone has any further concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to contact me on office@likit.co.uk.

Best wishes,
Lindsay
