eating mud. which mineral is needed?

My horse has been on box rest for 4 weeks so far.
The last couple of days when his mate is tied next to him for a chat he tries to eat mud.
Yesterday he was licking and biting the others horses turnout rug and today he was biting the clumps of mud out of his mane. Really chewing on in and licking his mates mane.

This isn't a grooming going.
My horse is definitely eating mud.

Which mineral does he need?

He has ad lib haylage, and a salt lick in his stable.

get a saracen stable lick or paddock lick they are good and arnt messy

All depends on your soil, if he really is missing something. Could also be due to boredom/frustration/stress. Add a broad spectrum mineral and salt lick but I suspect it is more stress related.

I would go for a all purpose not just a certain mineral. I use naf general purpose in all my horsesdinners

He is on pink powder but think I will get a general purpose suppliment aswell.

If he's on pink powder you don't need a general purpose as well

Usually selenium when eating mud/earth. You could also try D&H Equibites which might work too. They have been very successful stopping a very destructive wood chewer!
