Eating soil?

Hi has anyone got any ideas how I can stop my mare eating soil! There is grass in the field but she likes to dig a hole and stands there licking the soil And I am worried she will get tummy ache. She gets plenty of minerals with her feed.
 
how long has she been eating soil for? might be worth getting her checked over by a vet especially if there is a lot of forage available and you are confident she is getting the minerals she needs
 
The horse needs minerals. In a lick form or powdered, the latter is best. Lambs, when they've been born and kept in barns will, just as soon as they are turned out, seek out mole hills, and appear to eat them!

Thanks for the replys Maybe I will try a lick in the field but why would she use one in the field but she won't touch the ones in the stable and she gets a complete food.
 
To stop your horse eating soil add some salt to your feeds,my vet told me to do this when our TB was soil eating ,and it stopped her.

20 years ago I had a client who would get all the molehills from her field and put them in buckets for the horses to have in their stables, it was to give them a very natural and easy obtainable minerals.
Apparently something that they did during the 1st world war when horses were working in the front line.
I have passed it on to many clients and they all seem to agree that the horses will eat it if they need it and it does not seem to harm them.
Mole hills were used as the soil due to the soil having less of a chance of being contaminated
 
Defoe short of a vitamin and mineral i would defy buy something which you can put into her feed and see how she goes, also a quick phone call to your vet and see what they advise you to try her on they should be happy to help you xxxxx
