When you bid on things on ebay does it put you off that the seller doesn't except paypal or debit/credit cards , more so on higher priced things ?
I don't know if its just me or other people are apprehensive paying by cheque / postal order etc ??

Thanks 4 reading

It's obviously more trouble to write a cheque and post it, but you can understand the seller's point of view. Paypal is notorious for buyers doing a chargeback for the most spurious of reasons and Paypal almost always comes down on the side of the buyer, so you are very vulnerable as a seller if you offer Paypal. And I have had worst experiences with buyers in the equestrian section than anywhere else on ebay - I don't know why that should be but that's my experience.

If it's a good bargain and the seller has good feedback I would be happy to write a cheque, it certainly wouldn't put me off.

I prefer to pay by paypal too, more because it is faster and safer than anything else, although I also think paypal is rubbish and their customer service is the worst I have ever come across.

Sorry but the paypal fees are quite high, so when i have sold items over £50 i will not use paypal i ask for a cheque as payment. Yes paypal is good for the buyer but not so good for the seller, if you take into account you still have your ebay fees as well.

Further to what tamster says, I won't accept Paypal now as 2 of my friends have had problems with it.

They act like 'god' over your money and both friends have as far as I am concerned, had their money stolen by Paypal.

Would rather risk payment by cheque and wait forever for it to clear, or even better, Postal orders.

PayPal are just a normal credit card agency.

What people don't appreciate is that it cost money to process credit cards. However PayPal is cheaper than getting your own merchant account machine and the phone call costs!

They do come down on the side of the buyer, but so does a credit card. Anyone who has been 'stung' by PayPal usually made a mistake. You need to insure everything you send.

What she said!

You do need to read, understand and comply exactly with PayPal's T&Cs but then you are reasonably safe.

I won't buy from anyone who doesn't accept PayPal either.

Have a look at the community boards on Ebay and you might change your mind that PayPal always side with the buyer. As a seller, read up on the Seller Protection Policy, adhere to that and there shouldn't be any problems.

PayPal isn't perfect, but they don't rob peoples money - buyers do! when they make false INR or SNAD claims.

PayPal do make mistakes but there are appeal processes.

Read the rules, make sure you comply with them and 99% of the time it's perfectly safe.

PayPal is a third party payment processing company, not a credit card company.

They need to be profitable and therefore charge fees.

I use paypal as a buyer, but rarely as a seller.

I don't sell expensive things, and the fact that they charge you to list an item with paypal, then if someone uses it to pay, then they charge you to take the money out and put it in a bank account (my parents have the account, anything I sell is taken out of the paypal account and put in my back account) leaves me with a good £3 less profit on an item that only sold for £20 max.

I've sold a lot of things on ebay; recently I sold a Harry Hall gilet and it went for £17 with me not accepting paypal. It didn't fit the buyer and she resold it and accepted paypal, and it sold yesterday for £16...

Ebay don't charge to list with PayPal, they charge to list full stop. If you transfer £50 and over, there is no charge.

The PayPal fees on £20 would be 88p, there is a 25p charge for transfering less than £50

You just need to be wise with paypal and play them at there own game...

It's a safe enough business tool as long as you cover your a**e at every step!!

The seller protection policy don't mean a thing! I followed it to the letter previously, sold item at over £400, I got stung by paypal playing silly buggers and holding the money.
Buyer didn't resolve the issue so I paid him a visit to collect the cash!! OK so it's a trip of 180 mile, but it was worth every penny to make him realise some buyers don't forget... I got my pennies, he remained healthy, and I doubt he'll screw anyone else in the future.

Paypal play at a very silly game, play the game back and you should be ok, if not your looking at compensation, refunds of fees, late payment fees, costs for bank charges, damage to reputation etc, the list goes on....
My last argument got resolved...the cheque had 4 figures before the 99p, the payment involved....£37.99.
It's worth chasing em down, a court visit if need be, I'll continue using them, knowing that I'll win again in future!!

It depends on the sellers feed back comments.....the more the better.....so not sure if it matters trust wise.....if they use paypal or not.

I won a fone on ebay for over £100.......the seller wanted instant payment through paypal.....needless to say it was a scam.......the seller had made about £8000 doing this.....selling the fones all at the same time....and taking instant payments........I got my money back so was very lucky.

I will only buy from people using Paypal. Daughter bought a dvd from someone a couple of years ago, sent cheque. Seller had a good feedback though not that many. To cut it short dvd never arrived although cheque was cashed. Ebay/paypal not interested because amount was only £15.00 although seller was removed. I found out about at least 4 other people who had been conned like this not a large amount of money but still very annoying

I don't use Paypal either buying or selling. I don't like their charges (as a seller).

I will always pay by PO which means the buyer can cash the order at the same time they post my parcel (if they want to). But then, I'm a cash kind or person, I gave up my credit card habit a few years ago now...
