Ebay - Heritage Saddlery

I think he's a poster on here , so I'm sure he will tell you himself soon enough

There is confusion over this name. There is a genuine heritage, whose products are fabuous, then there is a imitator, whose products are not good. I am unsure as to who/what, what you need to make sure the seller is called Matt, who owns the genuine name/great goods. The genuine heritage maker/seller is indeed a member on here.

If it has a green bridle badge it is the heritage bridlework that is manufactured in India using exported English leather and India buckles and hook studs etc.

Matt makes top quality English bridlework in this country and was the original Heritage brand but unfortunately didn't protect his brand name and it was used by the wholesaler who imports the "other" Heritage bridlework I mentioned first.
Hope this makes sense?
I am sure Matt will be on here sooner or later to tell you himself, Oz

if there's two companies using the same name that would explain a comment made to me by a master saddler this week he said heritage bridle were Indian leather although stitched together very nicely .
i didn't say anything at the time but since Ive google etc and found that the one i have is English leather manufactured in England (Samuel sharp label)
the brow band motif is black and all the buckle have heritage on them.
and just for the record i totally love the look and fit of my bridle and i think my horse is happier in it too.
I'd recommend one .
in fact id like another so i can fit my jumping bit to it so Matt if your on here got one spare with a discount nudge nudge wink wink.

I had a heritage bridle (black label) and to be honest I didnt think the leather was that great. I think that the kieffer bridles are much better quality and are aproximately in the same price bracket.

I also had a matching heritage breatsplate and running martingale and again, I didnt think it was brilliant. I have only used it a couple of times in the year I have owned it and it hasnt worn as well as another breastplate I bought from a saddlery in Walsall (Kirkland) which I have used at least twice a week for 3 years and is still very supple.

Just to be totally clear:-

Heritage - imported
Wholesaled by Snowshill Trade Saddlery, they also have the Rhinegold leather brand which is German leather.

Just to be clear german and english leather, are grades and have zilch to do with where the hide originated or the tannning took place.

This is the brand

Heritage Saddlery on eBay (and their own website)

UK based and apparently 100% English items. Make made to measure items.

This is their brand

Worth noting to everyone that English cows are not often used, as due to the 30 month rule they are a bit small and prior to that they had warble fly. So even hides purchased in Walsall may have been imported.

What is important is quality and fair trade. As a rule of thumb, if it was made in the UK expect to pay from £100, if made abroad its going to be £50 and under (although not any more with the decline of the GBP)

Thankyou CotswoldSJ, you beat me to it!

Kickandshout, you have a Heritage imported bridle. They don't use Indian leather, they use exported english leather (samuel sharp) out in india to make up the bridles with.
Then ship them back over here and have the English label on them and the Samuel Sharp label, it's a big con to make people think the bridle itself is made here in the UK.

I charge £120 for a hand made bridle upwards, for what I can buy the "imported" Heritage bridles in for from Snowhill I can't even buy the leather and fittings to make my own with.

thanks for clearing that up
either way im pleased its 'english' imported or otherwise and stitched nicely ( not my opinion as stated earlier)
seems a total con though in the olden days you said english and you meant english !!
if a true english bridle cant compete in the money stakes no wonder people are buying the cheaper english type.
hope that made sense.

if it says 'english' it bloody well should be if you get my drift.

Yes I totally agree and it is infuriating when people say to me "HOW much?" when I quote them a price on a new handmade bridle, then they tell you they can buy "English bridlework" on ebay for £30 thinking that the bridle is made here!
The imported bridles are not hand stitched they are all sewn on a sewing machine.
Shire's used to sell a "James Stirling range", sounds nice but that was the same, made in India using english leather.
I am not up on their latest range as I don't sell Shire's products now but I am sure they are still using the same tactics.

Hello everone,

Yes, if anyone out there has a bridle with any branding on it, any name, heritage badge, label etc it IS NOT ONE OF MINE!

At the moment all my bridles are totally plain. I am waiting for some new bridle badges to arrive soon and the will have the name "Marlow" on them and will soon be attached to all my bridles.

All my saddles and tack are 100% English made, leather, fittings etc.

Anyone wishing to see my comfort bridles for comparison can see them here
