Anyone know if you're covered for a brand new item arriving in a ripped and torn box? I bought a scooter for my son's birthday on Friday and its arrived packaged only in a single layer of brown wrapping paper. The outer paper was not ripped or torn but when I opened the wrapping this is what the scooter's box looked like http://s1123.photobucket.com/albums/l553/master-spiritus/Scooter%20packaging%2019th%20Sept%202011/

I contacted the seller and queried whether the box had been packaged damaged (since I can't see how the inside box could be torn like this without the thin paper wrapping being torn, ripped or dented - which it wasn't.) They've replied that the scooter and its box were in perfect nick when it left then and that it's tough luck that the box was damaged in the post. Deep sigh.... where do I stand? The scooter IS okay inside the box but as I was buying it as a gift and as brand new and boxed, I was expecting it arrive in undamaged condition. :( :(

I don't think you're covered for the box - sorry! - because you don't buy the item not the box that contains it.

How about taking the scooter out of the box and putting a big bow on it instead? We do this for our kids bikes at Crimbo. Also saves the kids from having to wait while we put the bikes together. We leave the bikes (or any other big present they are having) in the kitchen, wait for the kids to open their other presents and then send them in the kitchen for something and wait for the squeals of delight!

Good thinking Bat Man!!!! :)

Still, me thinks packaging anything in a single layer of brown paper and hoping it'll survive the postal service is a bit much. And eBay do allow sellers to list items as 'New - other' which I think would have better described an item being posted out in a badly torn box :(

Yu could open a dispute via ebay - item not as described as a damaged/tatty box should be covered in the listing.

The seller should pack properly to survive Royal Mail and I would double box, bubble wrap or put foam carpet underlay around a box of that sort unless I'd listed as tatty box.

TBH if you got it at a good price wrap it and tape the paper to the box and your son won't care - or put a bow on it as suggested above.

Don't forget appropriate feedback:-
Item new but box battered inside untorn paper, seller not bothered - tough luck

Fits in the spaces for a negative.

I'd go for the big ribbon trick - excellent idea.

But, I would also ask for the postage fees back as they did not wrap it correctly.

If item is listed as "new in box" then I would expect the box to be in good condition. Ask them nicely, (think you have done this!), tell them what you are going to do and what you want ie postage back/discount etc if nothing received I will report you to ebay - then tell ebay!

Good luck.

Sellers cant leave negative feedback!

I never knew that! Should be able to if you had a nightmare buyer that took ages to pay!

I hate that sellers can't comment on feedback if it's positive. Some guy gave me +ve but wrote "took a long time to receive". The item ended on a Friday, i said the item will be posted the Saturday after payment is received. He paid Sunday therefore had to wait over a week for dispatch! Now i have a stupid comment on my glittering feedback!

I know! I have had many arguments with ebay and got nowhere! I just dont put any feedback on if they have been rubbish buyers. I also wait for feedback to be given before I leave any for anyone else. x

Well the seller was a muppet to pack in thin paper, on the other hand couriers can be real ***** about handling boxes and I've even seem them kick boxes hard in their vans (usually when fallen on them!). So not surprising that its damaged!

You could return it under eBay policy, but would cost a small fortune!

To save the environment, recycle the box and use a big bow rather than wrapping paper :)

Surely your son is going to be more interested in playing on the scooter rather than inspecting the box for damage... I suspect he won't even notice. I'm sure he will be very grateful that he has got such a lovely present for his birthday. :)
