A well known EBay scam involving cars has moved into the horse world.
If you are looking to buy a stable block/saddle/trailer PLEASE be careful.

I was browsing EBay as per usual & I noticed a stable block for sale. It caught my attention because I was pretty sure I'd seen it up for auction over a week ago. It had less pictures this time (only 3 when previously there were 7). The description was identical but it had added.
'You can buy this for £1,900 & I will deliver it. No Paypal (because of fees) but will take a bank transfer. For more information please contact morconltd.gmail.com'

I was intrigued, thought maybe the previous sale had fallen through & it would be massive bargain ;) so I pinged an email off.

The reply came & if I'm honest at first it seemed legit. They had attached 4 more photos & offered more if I wanted & asked if I wanted to know anything else. However as I read it something didn't quite sit right. A couple of things such as saying it came with 'free shipping' (odd terminology) & whilst not shockingly bad the email had a couple of mistakes that was enough to make me wonder. The clincher was it said if I did want to purchase all I had to do was send my EBay ID, address & tel number so they could open a purchasing transaction through EBay. Well at this point the alarm bells were going so loudly - there is no such thing as a 'purchasing transaction' & if you do sell something you don't need the details because EBay gives them to you!
The next morning the listing - which had several bids on had been completely removed (obviously reported as a fraudulent listing).

I thought I'd see how far this scammer would still go. I emailed him, giving fake details & said I would like to buy the stables.
This evening I received an invoice from EBay. HOWEVER this only came to my email no sign in my EBay account. The invoice also contained all of the fake details I had sent in my last email!
BUT other than that it was very, very convincing. There were also working links although most of these were attempting to get my password!

The invoice said I would pay the money into an EBay holding account until I had checked the goods. This holding account was to ensure I kept my Payment Protection & to prevent fraud....oh the irony!!

Obviously I have forwarded this on to EBay's spoof email department.

So please, please people beware! Remember the old saying...if it looks too good to be true it probably is! Also if you are buying through EBay have a good read of the 'preventing fraud' section.

Thanks for that, while not looking at buying stables, this scam seems so indepth I probably would have called for it!

Ebay is well know place for scammers another one is fake emails from paypal. BE CAREFUL DO NOT OPEN THEM,THEY ARE SPOOF. Trying to get your info.
Ebay and paypal ALWAYS put your name .Scammers don't,they usually put something like, dear paypal account holder).Just delete them.
Ive been scammed on ebay for small cheap items.

Sellers can be scammed too if the item is collection only. Purchasers pay by Paypal, then collect item and then say they never received it and apply to PayPal to get their money back. You then lose the item and the payment as there is no proof that they ever collected it. The only way to stop them is to get them to sign a receipt saying they have received the item in the listing. They are some cunning sons of bs out there :(

It's not just Ebay... My friend was recently caught out with a scam on Gumtree. She saw a saddle she liked, right size, right price, just what she needed.

The person said they worked for Parcel Force and that they would send the saddle out through work for free... a very genuine looking Parcel Force email arrived stating that the saddle would be delivered between 09:00-12:00noon and there was a tracking number.

Needless to say the saddle never arrived and Parcel Force hadn't sent the emails and she lost the money, I typed the contact email address of the seller into Goolge and there are hundreds and hundreds of people who have been ripped off by the same person... same story and the same email sent out to them saying that they worked for Parcel Force...

Ive seen a couple of quite nice horseboxes for 99p starting bid ;) and happened to see one of them advertised on horsemart for £14995 :) It was soon removed. Daft thing is someone bid on it and it was obviously a scammer, did they really think they'd get an 02 nice horsebox for 99p???

My friend actually lost over £2,500 on a trailer on ebay - same thing, through email and not ebay.

The police investigated, but lets face it, unless you are a driver, in which case you are an easy target, there isn't much the police can/will do!

I too was scammed over a trailer on ebay in the same circumstances as your friend, the police have failed to track em down and ebay do nothing it seems as there a couple of dodgy listings for trailers just about every week.I have written to Watchdog amongst others please suggest your friend does so too as the more people who contact them the more likely they may folow it up!

Hi I just wanted to let you know about a Preloved/BD website scam. I have just been scammed £420 for a saddle, which I now think was never owned by the person. I have reported her to the National Fraud Office and would be grateful if you would post on your site about her. I had advertised for a particular make of saddle on both Preloved and the British Dressage website. She contacted me via text and sent me a photo of the saddle. Anyway the saddle never arrived and she is refusing to answer either phone, text or email. The only details I have are that she is from Bromley in Kent. If anyone has an address for Poppy Eastwood, I would be grateful as I can pass that on to the police. Her mobile number is 07957 933270. Please pass this on to as many as possible so that she doesn't get anyone else.

Oh dear, another one scammed by that girl :( If you are on facebook, please join Kent Equestrian Grapevine as there are a huge number of people that have been scammed by her in the last couple of weeks - I will PM you some details.

Im shocked that quite a few of the names popping up on here as scammers Ive known years and never had a clue!!

If I was selling a collect only item, I would take a photo of them with the item and ensure they signed for it.

Christ I never realised there were so many well known scammers still getting away with the deed

You really do have to he careful with the Internet!

If you're buying something you haven't seen, only ever do it through paypal after checking terms to make sure you're protected or with a credit card that offers the same protection.

The moment you send money straight to someones bank or through anything other than a trusted payment site or credit card processor, walk away, you will probably never get that money back.

I was hot by ID theft and fraud to the tune of £140k in my twenties.

One of the scary things about that was learning just how very easy it is to fake emails. It is really very easy and if you want to send someone an email from say, HSBC or ROYAL mail, you can get it done from your home computer in about 2 minutes with a credit card for about a tenner.

I'll still buy things off ebay and such like, but I won't part with money until I have seen the product OR I know I am protected if it goes wrong.

Thanks for sharing OP...always good to keep awareness up.

Quick q for you knowledgeable folks- I have a few things I am going to advertise locally for sale. If people want to pay into my PayPal account do they just need my email account?
Thanks.

Just the email address your paypal is set up with.

If buying, another thing I do now is the same when people are buying horses...I google the names, numbers etc to see what is thrown up.

It's scary how widespread this and, and how well done it is in some cases. You don't get so many of the obv ropey Nigerian princesses/winning the Canadian lottery, it seems but people have got a lot better at being convincing :(

On a positive note, I was a little bit worried about tickets that came up on here actually, but they were genuine, I sent the money and got the tickets and had a fab time. Wouldn't normally do that but took a punt as poster seemed genuine and no alarm bells went off. Phew.

But def a good reminder to be extra careful.
