I've been sharing a friend's lorry for the past few months but she has decided to sell.
Fortunately I hadn't got round to selling my trailer because of the bad weather, but OH has sold our towing car and bought himself the car he has really wanted for years, but could never have as I needed something to tow with.
So I now need to find a car that I can use for towing but which won't cost me an arm and a leg to run. I do about 50 miles a day between home, yard, work and also use my car sometimes to travel for work so I need something fairly economical. I want to tow a 505 with a 16hh horse - total weight about 1700kg.
My budget is up to £5k or thereabouts.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Is 'economical towing car' an oxymoron?!
What about a Freelander 1 - I have a feeling that their tow weight is around 2000kg, but not totally sure.

Yes, I suppose it is.
What I should have said is not too outrageously expensive to run

Not very economical when the repair bils come in, they are not a good tow car, leave them to the school run mums and hairdressers

... I would look at a SWB shogun ( 2000 on) maybe a discovery or jeep cherokee should be able to get a tidy one of any for £5000

Thanks - economical was definately the wrong word to use!
I've been doing a bit of research and the Freelander doesn't have a high enough kerb weight for what I need. The 2.5 discovery is a definate possibility though probably a bit thirstier than would be ideal.
I'll take a look at the shogun and jeep.
I usually run my cars until they die - it goes a bit against the grain to get rid of one that still works. Oh well, needs must!

Thanks - I'll take a look at those. That's pretty much what I get to the gallon with my current car so I would be more than happy with that sort of mpg.

Just price a clutch first and they are ok if you can change them for a new one every 3 or 4 years then you will pay far more in depreciation than the fuel cost... sorry x trails are unsutitable for towing a horse trailer as they are right on the limit with nothing in reserve...
