I plan to sell my Grand Scenic with 12 mths MOT in April, and need a car that will tow a 1000kg trailer and a 16 hand cob... so anything really

Older Freelanders will tow 2000kg.... sportage will tow 1600, etc etc..

Now I don't mind if it's a bit juicy while towing, but it will be our family run around too, so can anyone tell me how economical some of these diesels are please??

Defo want Diesel

Won't have too much money to spend, but want something that doesn't drink for a past time and OK to tax!

Is there such a car/4x4 that can do it all?

Looked on Autotrader for the comparisons, but I think their stats lie

So want real experience X

Are you restricted by a B licence or do you have B+E?

Also - a price you are willing to go to might help .....

From your figures I assume your trailer is 1000 unladen and the load/horse is about 600 ???

I have been trying to be more economical so sold lorry and bought a light weight ifor 403 (750kg roughly) to tow my 16'1 500kg horse around so total weight of 1250kg approx.
The car we have can tow 1800kg it is a mercedes c class. I have to say if I didnt already have the car and was going to buy something I would buy something with a better towing capacity.
Maybe a 2.7diesel 4x4 would be the most economical rather than the huge 4litre jobs?

I have recently updated my V reg landrover TD5 (2.7 TD) to a newer discovery 3, but I must admit the older disco was more than upto the job. Easily pulled an Ivor Williams 510 with a 16.3 huntermare in it.

Just so you know your pricing, my TD5 (1998) sold for £4000 and they hold their money well. It was economical to drive but landrovers can be pricey on parts. I didn't worry too much though as I had it 7 years and didn't hesitate to get another, I just needed to update it really.:)

Yerp I am well old, so have B & E... really don't want to spend over 2k!

I will be using the vehicle for running to stables, school runs etc aswell as holidays, so it will just happen to tow aswell, needs to be good on fuel!

We love our toyota hilux, its comfy, lovely to drive and can pass a petrol station or three. Its also got a big boot, handy with horses.
We had a jeep for two years, wouldnt go there again.

I tow with an older type Toyota Hilux (like the one they tried & failed to destroy on Top Gear!!) I also have to use it as my main form of transport and I can thoroughly recommend it , great to drive and very economical. Also in all the years that I've had it has never failed it's MOT & i've only ever replaced tyres, radiator, and the timing belt - it's just so reliable:D They are still in great demand and I've lost count the amount of times random blokes have stopped me to ask if I want to sell it, but it's not going anywhere until the day it finally dies on me!!!

I have been told that the newer flashy Hilux's are thirsty but my older model is excellent, probably because it hasn't got all the extras and gadgetry that they come with now:):)
