Economy feed ranges

My local tack shop does there own mix & nuts. Very good for my average do-er, just so I can feed him something at feed time, that isnt going to pile weight on. I think the only difference in economy feeds and 'named' feeds is the quality of the ingredients. Wouldnt use them for a poor do-er how ever

interstingly enough I have nearly always bought "own brand" from my local feed merchants - both nuts and mix. When I was in there the other day a huge Bailey's artic was unloading - loads of pallets with it on so assume "mine" is made by Baileys - at £5 a sack

sad git that I am I actually did a spreadsheet of costs of feeding.

the 'barefoot mix' is probably the best all round value for money and it is made of good quality ingredients with no added cheap fillers.

it works out about 1/3 the price of a good brand mix.

I have been feeding the pegasus cubes and mix to my two grass-kept thoroughbreds and have been pleased enough with it, especially for the price. One horse looks incredibly well on it (she has always been the better doer) and the poor-doer has looked ok on it, although is now on conditioning feeds now he is back in work.

Spillers make Pegasus cubes and mix - spillers quality with no-brand prices.

Have to say i love Pegasus cubes. I feed them to both my youngsters with honeychop chaff. (Abut £4.59 a bag). I spend a minimal amount on feed every month but i do supplement their feeds with good quality balancers and vit & min supplements.

do you have a CWG shop near you?? they do own brand feeds which are ace:D

I second this, love the CWG equi club range, they do there own chopped alfalfa which is only around £7 a bag instead of Alfa a original at £12. The only thing you have to be careful of (which I think someone else has already mentioned) is to check the nutritional analysis on the bags if feeding a poor doer. I have a veteran TB who I was desperately trying to get some weight on. Was using own brand conditioning cubes as I assumed they'd be higher in digestible energy, after a couple of months not getting anywhere I check the breakdown and there was only 9mj/kg of digestible energy, changed him to baileys no 4 which is 13mj/kg and he's looking fab.

All in all I think it depends what your feeding and why as to wether own brands suit your horse.

Edited to add.........just thougt that although own brand didn't work for my horse hellywelly1's horse was quite poor when he came to my yard 4 weeks ago, he's been on nothing but the CWG range and he's looking fab now!
