Taking the drug ecstasy is no more dangerous than riding a horse, a senior advisor has suggested.

Professor David Nutt, chairman of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), outlined his view in the Journal of Psychopharmacology.

The council, which advises the government, is expected next week to recommend that ecstasy is downgraded from a class A drug to a class B one.

Ministers have outlined their opposition to any such move.

Professor Nutt wrote: "Drug harm can be equal to harms in other parts of life. There is not much difference between horse-riding and ecstasy."

Organ failure

The professor said horse-riding accounted for more than 100 deaths a year, and went on: "This attitude raises the critical question of why society tolerates - indeed encourages - certain forms of potentially harmful behaviour but not others such as drug use."

Professor Nutt eh?

Thoughts people?

I put this in the news section

The only thing I agree with is yeah, horse riding is dangerous and so is taking drugs.

Does it a take professor to work that one out

agree with kenzo, though you have to take into account how many people take ecstasy and how many people horse ride. To compare the deaths you need to have percentages not just numbers.

Horse riding more fun anyway!

He's spot on. I've often thought having horses is comparable to a drug habit. You live in poverty to feed your habit, you're in constant need of a wash and you frequently end up in A & E (well that might just be my horse!)

I believe a lot of the danger with ecstatsy comes from the fact that a lot of the time you actually don't know what you're taking (though I'm no expert so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). At least when you get on a horse you know exactly what you're doing
smile.gif
Even if you do have to be a bit brave and a bit stupid to do it

Pus, the highs you get from horses are real and last you forever. Can't say the same for a drug.

But doesnt that make us horse riders even more stupid, we know the risks, yet we take em!

I prefer the term brave

Though I think my OH would beg to differ.

Good point I was discussing terror thresholds yesterday.

I will sit on a horse bombing cross-country with a little apprehension.

I will pass out if I have an injection

I nearly threw up going to my parents with groceries in a 4 x 4 on icy roads yesterday because their estate is iced up and I was frankly sh@t scared.

This made me laugh when I saw it in the paper

! You just wonder where they got the idea to compare it to horse riding, crazy! But I do have to agree with you Flames_Slave, you've made some good points!

The nutty professor seems to have forogotton to address the general culture surrounding drug use, such as drug addicts stealing to feed their addiction, etc.

Can you imagine it:

Judge: "So why did you burgle the house?"
Accused: "Well the price of shavings had just gone up - AGAIN, and my horse needed a new rug."

If you think about it there is like 2 million people who ride and only 100 deaths whereas with ectasy the ratio is a lot smaller so a lot higher risk :P

very good!

Plus, if you don't kill yourself riding, it is otherwise good exercise and character building.
Whereas if you don't kill yourself taking ecstasy, you end up a cabbage anyway.
Oh and very few people look as stupid riding a horse as they do when off their face. Although I have to say, one or two exceptions do come to mind

PMSL!!!!

I believe most things in life have some form of danger attached to them. Just the other day I was walking down my drive minding my own business, when out of nowhere came a low-flying pigeon. The pigeon knocked me clean off my feet and I fell backwards into the open wheelie bin (I'd been walking down the drive to shut the wheelie bin which my husband stupidly left open earlier that day). I became wedged stuck into the wheelie bin and, in my attempts to free myself, the wheelie bin fell over. I cracked my head on the pavement. Not to mention the embarrassment it caused.

Maybe I should stop walking down my driveway as it is clearly quite dangerous.

Now thats funny! Image of legs waggling out the top of a bin and pigeon with a smile on its face

Just because he compares ecstasy to riding in safety terms doesnt mean to say riding is safe!
Professor Nutt Job if you ask me!

There are health benefits to riding, what health benefits are there to taking E?

haha they looked at total numbers of deaths per year according to bbc news
in that case obviously ecstacy is not as dangerous as eating as more people die choking per year than taking the drug.(3000 vrs 30)

total rubbish-how many people ride per year and how many people take the drug per year?!professor nutt is obviously off his.

you cant just tot up the total number of deaths per year as a comparision.stupid.load of horse crap.lol

any chance they can look at other end points-such as the crime used to get money to fund the drug habit.dont know about you, but no horse riders i know go round robbing people to fund their dangerous riding habit!
or how many of them use/ go on to use other drugs and end up with other associated conditions-like HIV?and cause a great burden on the NHS with those associated issues?!

and lowering its class will only increase its use-which will increase deaths per year as it will carry less of a sentence if someone deals or possesses it so people wont have as much incentive NOT to take/deal it.
