HOW do you keep your eczema at bay during winter?

No matter what i do it flares up due to handling wet hayledge, the cold, mud, damp jods etc :(

it drives me mentaaaaaal!

any advice is very much appreciated

My husband is having fantastic success with Sudocrem. He puts it on thick at the first sign of itching and a piece he has been struggling with for 25 years is almost gone

Aveeno with oatmeal and shea butter might be worth a try. It keeps my Psoriosis at bay, and I'm sure I saw a thread on here ages ago, where eczema sufferers also found it helpful.

+1

Aveeno is truly magic. But also wear waterproof gloves to protect your hands.

You can get it on prescription, it's not cheap.

Grape seed extract - husband has suffered for years, takes one a day and it keeps him clear, if he misses a couple of days its back..!

E45 has lanolin in it, my son had to be admitted to hospital due to lanolin sensitivity with his eczema... Try to avoid it
Slapping loads of Diprobase is the only thing keeping it at bay at the moment apart from the rotten steroid creams, Winter is a nightmare :( x

Central heating cold etc will make it flair up Hydromol is brilliant and oilatumIin bath but it will make it slippery). i usually find some sun creams quite useful even in winter. But Hydromol is fantastic and Skin specialists do recommend it. You can buy over the counter.

thanks guys, taking a note of these as ive totally had it and going to the docs tomorrow! sitting itching away and it keeps me awake at night! Hopefully someones said something thatll help me!

thank you all :)

I have awful eczema on my hands, have been to the doctors endless times and left with endless steroid creams but nothing works :(
L'occitane's hand cream is lovely though, might be worth a try?

You've put the fear of God into me. I never had eczema until this year, when I developed it on my legs - caused by varicose veins. Why is it going to be worse in the winter? (I use Dermacort and Vaseline Intensive Care - am allergic to Cetraben). I hoped it might be the opposite, and calm down in the cooler months?

Oh starryeyed my best friend has it on her hands and it is so sore, cracked and weepy sometimes, I feel for you! One thing that did help for a while was called graphites cream, we bought it randomly in a health shop and I think its for dermatitis. I don't think they have actually identified whether hers is eczema or something else :-(

Grrr phone.. Our infection control team.also recommend vitamin E.oil or almond oil applied at night with gloves on top to soothe chapped hands. Will be watching this thread for further tips.

Try cutting out milk or replace with goat milk and any shea butter or goats milk skin creams. Am allergic to E45/lanolin. Diprobase with a drop of lavender essential oil, tho i now use it neat-no scarring. aloe vera and yarrow are very soothing too. I put olive oil in my bath and a good heap of salt too -get out with someone elses skin, its brilliant! Also cnow fire (like chapstick for chilblains is great help-contains geranium oil which is very healing for skin/regenerating, rosemary & sage oils too. I also use coconut oil and milk as both bath soaks & moisturisers and recently argan oil too. Monoi de Tahiti oil is equally good once if starts healing so keeps you antibacterial (coconut) moisturised & smelling nice! I can't use many chemical products or many makeup types esp anything for the eyes.Almond oil too. olive oil with sugar & lemon as exfoliating scrub if you don't eat it first-great for when it starts to heal :)

Body shop hemp cream good for hands...use gloves amap too! I use a.silk scarf under my riding hat too which helps wiv eczema on forehead..finally anti histimanes really help to break the itch cycle esp at night when you can take stronger ones!

Seriously try Aveeno, it's amazing. Not only does it keep my and my daughter's eczema at bay but it's also a great general moisturiser. Boots often have it on 3 for 2.

Ahh!! I forgot, I developed eczema on my face, side effect of hormone treatment for Endometriosis, the eczema was so bad it looked like I had burns. I wouldn't go out it was agony, my sister went to the local health shop and was given 'Potters Eczema Cream' it's like a yellow stinky paste, within days it had started to go, I'm gobsmacked though, as I am very sensitive to topical stuff... Maybe worth a look? Good luck :)

Another Aveeno fan here - for psoriasis.

L'occitane do a none smelly shea butter handcream. They usually have it available in a small size, so worth a try. Its the best I've found.

Ok this is going to go down as the barmy post!

I have very acute psoriasis but have stellara injections so very clear at the mo but will make a note of this wonder cream you fellow sufferers are raving about.

Anyway, back to the subject in hand:

My brother used to suffer with very severe eczema tried everything the doc would throw at him but to no avail. One night, many moons ago, there was a Murphy's promotion night at the local pub and off he toddled and had one too many than was good for him. A few days later his skin started to improve so he went off and had some more - still kept improving so he started having a can a night - he was also semi over dosing on evening of primrose too.

He has kept this up for years (10+) and has never had a problem since - and he had the nasty kind that was dry, then wet then septic.

True story I'm not making this up - and I don't work for Murphy's :D

I have never found E45 to work either. My eczema is not as bad as it used to be but it does flare up sometimes and I often get itchy eyes, hands and legs. I don't use many specific eczema creams to be honest but I did cut out milk several years ago and I think this is one of the major factors. I use soya milk now for coffees and if I'm having cereal and my skin is tonnes better.

I bought a tube of emovate from the chemist to treat flare ups but I have also used sudocrem (the pit we have for the horses) if I am at the stables and i start to get any itching. It is good but it's just thick and a bit messy!

I was under the impression that diprobase cream shouldn't be used long term as it actually caused damage to the skin? There was a post previously on here about that. I havenever liked diprobase, it feels horrid on my skin.

Interesting - I am guessing Murphy's, like Guiness has a high iron content? Wonder if he had an iron deficiency.

Don't know but he does interchange between them and he doesn't have one every night now as far as I know.

The coma he was putting himself in probably was stopping the scratching at night too which would have helped.

If you like stout type drinks it might be worth a try - I really am not making it up

Diprobase? Hmmm...

I also read a story years ago in a mag about a little girl who suffered from horrific eczema, her cousins kept guinea pigs and the little girl had snuck to the cage (she hadn't been allowed to touch them because of the eczema) took a guinea pig out to play with and fell asleep with it, the guinea pig peed on her and where the pee had soaked through onto her skin the eczema CLEARED UP!!! I swear I'm not fibbing, or drunk or anything lol :D

I have a cream from the docs called Hydromol which I use as a cream, but you can also use in the bath/shower. Its essentially like a really good, non-shiny (almost!) vaseline, a great barrier that I coat my face in before doing the horses in winter. I use cutivate cream on my skin when it gets bad, again from the doctors, I love that cream.

I have to say to look at your diet though, cut out things that can make eczema flare up, I cut out dairy (mostly), oranges, tomatoes (anything acidic essentially) and caffeine. Caffeine is a vasodilator so will make any red skin appear redder. I would also make sure you're getting enough B vitamins, as I think a deficiency in these can cause skin to crack. :)

when I was about 4 I had horrific eczema all over my body. My mum had to cover me in cream (think it was diprobase) then soak bandages in warm water. wrap the wet bandages all over me then on top put dry ones. go to bed, wake up and take it all off- did that every night for god knows how long. I used to cry and cry because I hated it and looked like a mummy. literally covered in bandages except my eyes/nose/mouth/hair. but now my skin is amazing. never got the eczema back!
I have a little bit on my hands which is driving me crazy- goes away for a bit then comes back. so next time it comes back im going to wet wrap my hands every night :) so much effort but seriously worth it!

Funny I read the same story but it was a bride the night before her wedding who was crying herself to sleep comforted by the guinea pig which then peed on her and cured her for her wedding:rolleyes:
