Many creams for eczema are urea based which is where the wee stories are coming from ~quote

Really? Well well, I had no idea, that's interesting, I'm going to do some googling.... :D

This is going to sound a bit grim, but I have severe eczema and have had for all my life (40+) years. It gets worse in the summer, and then worse in the winter.

I've tried E45, atopic steroids, moisturisers, homeopathic, diet, essential oils, those sprays to cool the skin (which do stop the itching for a while) etc.

I had baths every night with oil in, or sometimes porridge oats (yum - not), and still was sore, itchy and raw.

Then one night fairly recently, I didn't have a bath - think I was too busy or something (this had never happened before), and I was really worried that it would flair up.

Next morning, after a surprisingly good nights sleep, my arms were smoother. Hmm.....thought I, I wonder why.

A bath or so later, i was sore again! Hmm.... I won't have a bath tonight!

Now, I have a wash in the basin daily, with no oil added, and a full bath only once or twice a week without oil (see, I said it was grim!). My skin is smoother, and less itchy, finally my uncontrollable eczema might be becoming controllable :D

It's early days, so I'm not counting my chooks yet, but....so far, so good.

There is an amazing product called Skinsure Plus and Skin sure Ultra
It was actually created by my local vet Brian Bennett and the licenced to use as a barrier cream for humans and eczema suffers...
it is steriod and lanolin free and can be bought over the counter or internet
I have seem amazing results for most skin problems including Sweetitch and I know a vet currently trialling it for a dog with infected mange with amazing results

Aveeno with oatmeal and shea butter might be worth a try. It keeps my Psoriosis at bay, and I'm sure I saw a thread on here ages ago, where eczema sufferers also found it helpful.

Aveeno! I was recommended it by a dermatologist for another skin condition (a allergic reaction) as its natural and he said the only moisturiser he'd ever recommend. I love it!

This is interesting, My daughter swears hers is made far worse by bathing or showering and i just assumed it was the shower gel or shampoo she used so keep trying different ones. She thinks its wet heat?! No idea if she's right but now i wonder?

Diprobase? Hmmm...

I also read a story years ago in a mag about a little girl who suffered from horrific eczema, her cousins kept guinea pigs and the little girl had snuck to the cage (she hadn't been allowed to touch them because of the eczema) took a guinea pig out to play with and fell asleep with it, the guinea pig peed on her and where the pee had soaked through onto her skin the eczema CLEARED UP!!! I swear I'm not fibbing, or drunk or anything lol :D

diprobase has never done anything for me, mum used to lather me in it when i was wee, it made no difference!

haha its a shame my poor guineas died then :( ! id try anything at this point.

went to the doctors today and he gave me cortisone cream, not like i havent had that before.. at my wits end!

i get this! mines is always particularly bad after a shower or bath. im a pure clean freak though so i cant not shower haha :(

I've had another thought!
There's this product called Oilatum, you can pour a bit into the bath and it is SO lovely! Really soothes your skin & keeps it soft. Lovelovelove it, lasts a while too as you don't need to use much. Definitely try!

And about the l'occitane stuff - they do a shea butter version which is suitable for sensitive skin, just avoid their limited edition scented bits x

I use Diprobase when I really have to - it's disgusting stuff - stinks vile and just seems to sit on the skin and not soak in, then sticks to clothes. But it does work after a few days....

E45 makes me worse - makes me really itchy
Sudocreme - actually pretty good!

I think it's the water! Honestly, I do... I have a horrible patch on my back and get it in my ears (yeah, really!) and it is made MUCH worse if either area gets wet. I avoid putting my head under water at all costs, and can actually manage to have a bath without getting my 'patch' of eczema wet on my back as it's right at the top- and I quite often do this when it's particularly bad/itchy for a couple of days as it really helps settle it down.

Also find sudocrem helps, though I have no idea why as it's so drying to skin generally.

Mine isn't that bad really. I really only get it when stressed or run down, but having dry sensitive skin anyway means a mild flare up leaves me very scaly. Aqueous cream is the best thing for washing with. And I find not over doing showers or baths. I have a shower daily, but try to avoid 2 if I can. And a good barrier cream before it flairs up, particularly on hands. And try to reduce central heating as much as you can, wear extra layers & leave off or on a lower setting. And watch what you wash clothes & bedding in. And rubber gloves round water too.

I wonder if you are reacting to SLS in bath products?(or any of the ingredients?) have you tried a paraben, sls & sulphate free?baby products are good or pure castille soap(bar or liquid) I would risk a plain bath/shower then maybe brave one using natural olive oil (only a drop)as a cleanser first...just don't slip!don'trub dry, pat dry & really watch what you wash clothes in..I was using my last resort & only option fairy non bio gel(bio & powders are bad evil flare up inducers for skin so always go non bio & liquid) but have since tried Aldi's own brand non bio (blue lid) not only can I safely wash things in it , its better! 50% cleaner @30degrees & £2.09 for 21 wash tub rather than £8 something for Failry which I often had to wash twice & still not truly clean so bonus all round.

Argh, I just took so long in typing a reply that I got logged out and lost it!

We have to maintain an sls free house due to OH's asthma and psoriasis. Green People products are lovely. I like Simply washing powder but it seems to be getting hard to come by, Ecover is good but pricey. I tried Eco Balls and I really wanted to like them but we don't have the weather to bleach out a white wash on the line (dark washes were ok - what the eye doesn't see...) and I'm afraid I lapsed.

OH uses a UV lamp (I just asked and he got very technical about the type of UVb Band!) for his psoriasis and has/does use vit D creams. He treats internally as well as managing soreness/itching. I mentioned the wee wee thing and he said some people use their own but as he also added - would you want to? He has researched this sort of thing for years.

The only things I can use on my face are either Dermol cream for the doctors or Liz Earle moisturiser for dry skin. Literally anything else makes it flare up.

For my body I use either dermol again for emulsifying ointment for hands / eblows / drier patches etc. It's really thick and greasy but ok if you put it on just before bed.

Hi, I get awful eczema. DO NOT USE E45 the lanolin makes mine awful. Sudocrem is good I normally have to use steroid cream and bandage my hands (they just fall to pieces) but it thins your skin and washes off so not ideal.

Didn't read the thread so it may have been mentioned but I use Epiderm. you can buy moisturiser or like a thick wax which is what I use. It really helps and makes it completely waterproof so if perfect for whacking on before heading up the yard. Hope this helps!

HOW do you keep your eczema at bay during winter?

No matter what i do it flares up due to handling wet hayledge, the cold, mud, damp jods etc :(

it drives me mentaaaaaal!

any advice is very much appreciated
i totally understand what you go through. i have suffered with eczema my whole life and three years ago up until 3-4 months ago it was so severe i wouldnt leave my house for weeks at a time. i am now in control of my problem and have created a website with all kinds of information on preventing a flare-up and treatments that are good/bad. you may find it useful at http://www.eczemastruggle.co.uk we can beat this one day at a time

I've suffered with eczema since I was in my teens and tried loads of different things. Some seem to work for a while then are no good! Doublebase used to work but now doesn't do much and tends to bring me out in spots - not proper spots though, little white blistery type and come over night!
For a proper flair up, I use elocom (sp?) cream, its the only thing thats worked for the last few years. Used to use hydrocortisone but seemed to stop working.
moisturiser - the aveeno works for my skin but can't use it every day or same thing happens as with doublebase! I use it twice a week then the rest of the week I use No7 protect znd perfect serum. This stuff is amazing! It moizturises enough to not need a proper moisturiser but also doesn't flair up my eczema.
Make-up - clinique brings me out in eczema the day after using it! Dior or Chanel foundations are the only ones I can use without triggering an eczema attack.

Might be worth seeing if you guys have a food intolerance. Often it comes out with skin problems. I developed psoriasis and we worked out it was anything cow related for me that set it off (dairy / beef). Now I know what it is, I can get away with a tiny amount but if I ate a steak then my nose goes red raw and I get big patches all over my legs! And its a lot worse in winter, the sun apparently helps keep it at bay. Worth a shot anyway :)
