Hi
My cremello mare came in from the field on Saturday with what I can only describe as a sack of fluid hanging from her chest between her front legs. Her left foreleg is very swollen and feels slightly warm, I think her left leg could also be slightly swollen at the top. She is eating and drinking fine and appears fairly happy. She does appear pretty sore on her front legs but she has recently had her shoes taken off due to arthritis enduced retirement. She has had hives recently but this is nothing new and has never caused a reaction like this. Anyone any ideas???

From the way you describe it bobz, I'd agree with AmyMay. Sounds exactly like a haematoma from a kick. A haematoma is when a blood vessel close to the surface of the skin is damaged, so blood leaks into the surrounding area. If it was deeper, it would be a simple bruise but when such damage is very near the surface, the leaking blood can form a sac under the skin. I've seen quite humungus ones! But they usually slowly resolve by themselves as the blood is re-absorbed. Sometimes gentle massage helps but be careful not to cause further damage. The only thing I would want to be sure of is that there is no underlying damage - I'm thinking broken bones. Has the vet been out or just advice over the phone?

Oh and just for the record, it's OEDEMA, although the American EDEMA is just about acceptable lol.

SNAP!! My boy has exactly the same thing!!! Luckily the vet was there last Wednesday when I discovered it and she had a good look - he had a swollen arm-pit and an Odema on his chest! She too said something has bitten him - the swelling on the arm-pit is the trauma site and the Odema is secondary!

She said to give him 2 Danillon for 2 days and cold hose the arm-pit for 2 days.... it is still slightly there but has gone down massively and now you can only see it if you look for it!

An old horse of mine had the same, he had been kicked, there was a big swelling in between his front legs, the vet squeezed it and loads of puss came out, he needed anti biotics and cold hosing, it cleared up in a few days.
