So my plan was that Eden was to be a nice easy confidence giving run before Badminton, hence just doing the BE90. However...............

I arrived to what can only be described as a soft clay bog . But ever the optimistic off I headed to get my numbers (dog in tow). No sooner had I stepped near the secretarys tent I got shouted at, telling me that if my dog wee'd on the tent or any foliage I would be fined (my dog was happily walking at my side on a short lead, thoughts of weeing had not entered his head :(). Now I am all for this, but there is a polite way to mention it to somebody who is about to hand £15 over , they were just plain rude!

Went to walk the XC which was 'interesting'. The organisers said it was suitable first timers run. Well if I was a first timer I would have turned round and gone home there and then . Fence 3 was a turning combination on difficult uneven ground, fence 4 was a bank complex, fence 7 was a curving line of 2 skinnys, the widest ditch infront of a pallisade I have ever seen at BE90, and at the second last a decent log ontop of a steep hill with quite a drop (they have put this in the BE80 aswell, no idea how they can say it is within height rules ). Add to this VERY uneven, rough ground, Some VERY boggy clay patches, and the VERY twisty course . I wasn't a happy bunny !

No time to dwell I headed down to the dressage. Well remember that soft bog clay I keep mentioning ? Poor Jem could barely walk in it, yet alone trot or canter. The horses were sinking in up to their fetlocks in clay bog . The organisers were attempting to roll the warm up area with horses in it, but it was not working! With no where else to warm up I walked round the lorry park until it was test time :(. If I thought the warm up had been bad, it was NOTHING to the arena. Poor Jem was sinking in to mid cannon and was really struggling, coupled with the fact I hadn't had a trot or canter, the test was not our best . Poor Jem tried but all we could do was do the movements vaguely at the correct markers :o. Needless to say I was not completely surprised to see I had 42.5. However we were still very comfortably within the top half of the section  (there were alot of late 40's and some 50's).

Showjumping was thankfully on a surface. However said surface had only been put down on Monday, hence it rode deep and dead :(. Little Jem jumped her socks off for a lovely clear round (I don't think there were many!). I was so pleased, especially when I heard a woman say to her friend as I rode out what a fabulous round she thought I had just ridden :D!

So now I had a conumdrum (sp??), XC or not. Just as I was debating in my head what to do I saw a horse on three legs hopping off the XC course . Well that made my desicion up for me. Untacked Jem, put her on the lorry and took her home ! With 10 days before Badminton I was not going to risk breaking her :o!

So all in all not the best outing (although Jem was a very good girl!), but feel very cheated that I paid £66 entry and £15 start fee, for a event that was not up to standard .

Ground sounds horrific!! Awful awful organizing by the sounds of it....

Think you deffo made the right decision to go home. Just not worth it!! Glad it went well for you up till then, such a shame about the ground and surface!!

:( Bummer. Lovely that she tried so hard for you though!!

thats very sad to hear that the ground was so bad for a first time an event has run :(

doesnt fill people with confidence in the event.

good luck for badders though :)

i don't do be , but if i even turned up to an unaffilliated ode i would be more than peed off with that . You would of thought with all that money you payed to go they could of aleast put it on better ground or done something to the ground before hand :/ i would be asking for my money back to be really honest - and as for the dog incident i can think of one or two one liners my dad would have said if someone had said something about one of ours :') i have to say even the pony club junoir ones in our area always have good going and you dont pay half the price to enter :)

Sounds like you need to fill in the feedback form on ERA.

A real shame but sounds like you made the right decision.

How on earth can the ground be boggy? We've not had decent rain for weeks?! Where abouts is it???

I can't believe the dressage was cannon deep, I wouldn't turn out in that let alone ride!

Cumbria! And believe me it IS that wet up here unfortunately. We had rain right up till Wednesday :(

we were there today as well, the arenas were so holding our pony was struggling to get her feet out, she's a mare and really showed her distaste at the going, i didn't realise the surface had only just gone down, lovely arena, but you're not supposed to jump on them for a while!!!!!, the xc was strange i didn't think much of the drop towards the end either. but at least the north had an early event, maybe it would have been a better july event when the ground dried out?

agree - completely unsuitable venue for an early April event. The ground is just not good enough there.

Well I can stop stressing for missing it then, phew. Saying that I have a (cumbrian bred) horse who love soft ground, so maybe we could of had a chance!
Maybe they should run an early event at Hutton or something?

We have clay fields. By July they will be baked solid! We have about two weeks of good going, inbetween boggy and rock hard. Not the best land to run an event on. What a shame though, it would have been nice to have another northern event worth going to.

Sounds like Jem did her very best, good luck for Badminton :).

I do find it odd though how they put a new surface down having jumped on the old one at a rally last year which I thought was great. It sounds like what we had feared unfortunately :( having been for schooling with PC last year, it's a shame as it's not far from us but definitely doesn't sound up to scratch at all to me.

Ahhh, so thats why people from round here went to Kirrie this weekend when Eden Valley would be much closer. Sounds awful, well done for not bothering with XC. Muchly relieved we decided to give it a miss. Good luck at Badminton:)

My gawd, our ground is concrete at the mo, haven't had rain for weeks now. We didn't even have time to roll our fields as it dried out so quick.

Poor you :( must have been very fustrating!

Sounds very bad and you were right not to risk your horse.

Appart from the fields, putting down a surface and jumping on it a week later is just asking for injuries. My last sand surface took 6 weeks before it was ready for use, and this one has been watered and levelled constantly for 3 weeks and is only suitable for walk. Unless they had a super, duper wax surface (which it doesn't sound like!!!) you need to let sand settle or any kind of sand rides deep. Terrible, I would want my money back.

As said above, anyone who hasn't already, please go to www.eventridersassociation.org and fill out one of our Feedback Forms, on this and other events you've attended this year.
If you haven't joined already, you should - the more members we have, the more Feedback we have, the more information we will have about what our members think and what our members want, and then the more we can do with it.
ERA is for Owners, Grooms, helpers, all other eventing enthusiasts, not just riders. Everyone who loves eventing and wants to see it keep improving.
We've been very impressed by the reception of our Feedback Forms from Event Organisers - they really are eager to hear what we all think about their events, the bad as well as the good. They all strive to improve their event to keep their clients happy and encourage everyone to attend their next event.
So, keep spreading the word, and keep giving us information, to benefit our sport for everyone. Thanks.

:eel: sorry to here you've had such a bad experience :(
so pleased i didn't go as i nearly changed my mind when i heard the sj was on a surface, i would also want my money back what a waste of time & money making the effort to get all the way there to find something like that :( very disapointing

And now BE have put up the wrong score for me! Something else to sort out tomorrow. I'll be very cross if they refuse to change it as it doesn't show my clear SJ!

How awful for the injured horse and its rider. We are on clay here, and I know what you mean about only getting about 5 days decent going between too soft and too hard. Last year a local event was cancelled at the last minute as the Technical Delegate/whoever it is, said the going was too bad for the event to take place.

Proper courses with decent going is exactly why people take part in affiliated events and pay all that money!

This was affiliated! Very shody of BE imo to allow it to run.

What a real shame, you were right not to run though if you didn't like the ground. Sometimes it is such a difficult choice whether to go ahead as it costs so much to enter, or to save it for another day.

The rutted ground was the same as the first Hunwick event, which I also vowed never to go back to. Hopefully, a lesson will be learnt for next time.

but at least the north had an early event, maybe it would have been a better july event when the ground dried out?

If you take into account the amount of times that Cumwhinton has had to cancel due to the weather in July, I don't think any time of year is guaranteed to be better than any other up here ;)

They have the same sandy soil as we have and my ground is near perfect at the moment. I was surprised at how soft the ground was in places. I didn't see any dressage but the mud in the arenas was pointed out to me.

I feel for the organising team as I know how hard they have worked. The same team organise the Hutton events and Cumwhinton. Hopefully, for next year, only sheep will be grazed on the course and not cattle :D

I walked the xc on Friday night and pretty much decided there and then to withdraw - didn't like some of the landings as were rutted and very unlevel. Was very dissappointed - plus course was terribly twisty and couldn't see how horses could get in a good rhythm. Such a shame as it would have been great to have an early run before Floors, but decided it wasn't worth the risk, and after hearing how awful the dressage was i knew I had made the right decision. Know how hard the organisers worked to get it to run as cancelled last year, but do think the location is unsuitable for a BE event.

I competed at Eden Valley in the BE100 on Saturday and had a FANTASTIC DAY. Ok, so the dressage warm up wasnt the best going ever, but for gods sake, GET ON WITH IT. One ring really was boggy and I understand that wasnt ideal, but everyone in your section had to cope with the same circumstances.

It was Eden Valley's FIRST running, and they tried very hard to please every one, it iritates me that your all posting very un helpfull complaints.

As for the SJ, it AMAZES me that you complain about competing on A SURFACE, I mean come on?! It was lovley and for your infomation there were a hell of a lot of clears. So please dont pick faults in a brilliantly built course and a fantastic surface.

As for the XC. It was advised as a good first timmers course, and I truly believed it was. If your going to enter a AFFILIATED event then you should obvioulsy have done SOME xc schooling. And as long as this course wasnt your first time EVER OVER some XC jumps then the course would have been ideal. It rode well with plenty of clears, But not just a walk over, the time was tight, and meant that no one could just trot round, it made you push on which is what the XC is all about. And there where alternatives when needed. Ground was a Little up hill and down dale, but its a CROSS COUNTRY for gods sake....what can you expect!

A great event with a fantastic warm atmosphere, I had a great day, As did lots of other people, so please, try and be helpfull with your criticism. We are short of events as it is in the North, and should try and support new ones such as Eden Valley.

I've been watching this thread with interest!!
We were at EV on Sat. too, doing be90 with young horse for a first run (since last year for horse and 2009 for son).
I can see where charliemouse is coming from, but have to agree with eventing novice that we had a good day.
The soft ground was the problem and really it was only the dressage arenas that were bad about 3/10 for them.
The SJ, as said was on a newly laid surface, but it was OK and a great course so 6.5/10 for that.
The XC, I thought was fine as well, not totally straightforward, but not horrible, and the ground was not bad at all. It wasn't holding and there was give in it. So 7.5/10.

Good luck at Badminton Charliemouse :)

Not sure I'll be back to EV, but I do wish them well.
