I know it used to (?) have a bad reputation due to the manager, does anyone know if there's a new one in place or can give me some information on what it's like to have a livery there?
swanston thornton or oxenford are better choices i dont own now but worked for said person know friends at thornton and oxenford that are very happy there dont know anyone on swanston but it usally has a waiting list like the other 2 most of the people i know of moved from meadowhead and mortonmains to thornton or oxenford and i wonder whyNo idea of how it fits geographically compared to those mentioned but I've heard good things from people at Swanston.
all you can do is go visit and see what they say she may of changed i would just be causius (sp) and they can be chalk and cheese or nice then totally controling can only think the mare and foal is hers thoI'm also really close to Meadowhead, less than ten minutes away by car and never any traffic. Swanston is also close, most others are a bit further.
That would be a nightmare. I'm double checking again that Swanston can't provide for a mare and foal before I make my decision (and obviously will visit Meadowhead too).all you can do is go visit and see what they say she may of changed i would just be causius (sp) and they can be chalk and cheese or nice then totally controling can only think the mare and foal is hers tho
There will be another foal there. I'm thinking of moving the foal with other youngsters when he's weaned. When is thr mare due?
I wouldn't want a mare foaling down at a busy livery yard, and then growing up on a livery without age appropriate company and suitable turnout for a youngster.
You'd perhaps be better looking for a (good) stud to take the mare to foal and to be able to run the foal on there once it's weaned.
A poster on here out Glasgow way and a trainer in Fife do youngstock livery. Nothing comes to mind as to where a mare could foal down.
I think I'm remembering right that this is going to be your first horse?
There's another mare in foal there, so they're probably being reckless too, then? Foals can be safely born without being on a specific foaling/breeding yard. I want to be nearby, and outsourcing the whole process to a place further afield would mean I wouldn't be very involved. I will have the breeder who sold her to advice me, and other people who are close by. The mare had an uncomplicated birth previously. I agree I'm going in at the deep end, but doom monging doesn't really help.I had a look at your other posts. Have you really thought this through?
I'm always the doomonger but there's always a risk of losing mare and foal.
If you read the breeding forum on here you'll see people have to practically live at their yard around foaling time. This isn't something to rely on other liveries or a YO to check. Of course plenty go smoothly when no one is around but id prefer to be prepared for all eventualities.
Id also question a breeders responsibility selling an in foal mare to someone that doesn't even have suitable livery sorted. I know it's 6 or so weeks until the mare arrives but a responsible seller/breeder should want to know where their stock are going and how a foaling would be managed.
I know you want an Icelandic and I'm assuming this is the only way that you found. I can't help but think there must be a better way that doesn't include a "bargain" BOGOF.
Everyone has to learn and everyone has to have a first at everything. First time owning is a lot but to purposefully throw a foal in the mix doesn't sit well.
I wouldn't want to be foaling on any of the yards mentioned. Not that some aren't good livery yards but there's a gulf between being a good livery yard and being a yard for breeding/foaling/youngstock.
Clearly I don't agree with your decisions so I'll bow out, but please have a very sensible think (head not heart) about what you are doing. Best of luck
I always try to be friendly and stick to the rules. Have been on a few yards and tend to make friends, not foes. Good to hear.I am a livery at livery yard in question. Speak to the YM re your situation but it’s very much the same as other livery yards. Keep it your head down, enjoy your horse and be friendly enough.
