EDT came today - uneven wear

My horses had the EDT come today to do their teeth. Two of my three were all fine and didnt have a problem but my little connemara x had to be filed down.

Is it possible for a horse to wear unevenly - left side only needed doing.

Theres no problem with teeth or anything but he said that its usual for Gem to just need the left side doing.

He then went on to say that it could be due to her age, shes the same age as my other two and my mum told him and he reckoned she was much younger. My mum never questioned it though.

Any advice?

Yes, my mare has one side that wears more than the other. There is quite a difference. I dont know why though! You do need to keep on top of it from now on though.

Not saying you hadnt before but now you know you have an issue you need to make sure you have regular checks.

It's quite normal - can be for a number of reasons, but given that you have been reassured by a pro that it is fine, then i wouldnt worry. It could simply be that the way in which she chews favours one side of her mouth over the other - if there were more serious problems, such as ulcer related issues etc, it would have been spotted straight away

would be difficult to say without seeing but yes it is possible depending if the horse chews on the same side. Re the age etc, if your EDT was fully qualified then I would trust his judgement!
 
Thanks, theyre always checked every 6 months by the same guy. Hes one of the best in the area, unfortunately i wasnt there (my mum was) to ask for more detail and yes hes fully qual.
 
My horses teeth don't meet on one side of his jaw and his gum line is becoming bannana shaped so he does wear his teeth down more on one side thatn the other! EDT said it may be somehting to do with his head shaking and his nerves as he uses his jaw action differently!
 
My old shettie (the one in the colic thread) has a wavy wear pattern, so it's uneven on both jaws, if that makes any sense? He's never been fed from hay nets, never had proper hard feed...I can only put it down to a minor uneven-ness being exacerbated by years of neglect - he was about 30 when I took him on and had his first dental check up then! Only side-effect for him is quidding.
 
My old boy had his done last week and his are more worn on one side, but then he's lost a few as well so has adapted to what he has left.
 
mine does to,

6months ago my EDT suggested moving around his haynet as they will always pull towards the door so that he was pulling the other way sometimes. I altered it every 2 weeks. He has just been again and said that it was better than last time. I don't think the pone will ever manage 12 months but hope it will still keep him more comfortable.
