EDT question

Hi all. Last night I came home with another older mare, in her twenties. She can't eat hay

She's trying, bless her, but it's just coming straight back out in balls. I've put her on grazeon ad lib and am feeding her mushes, I'll be ringing the Dentist tomorrow. Do you think that the EDT will suffice or with her problems eating hay is it likely she'll need a fair bit of work doing and require the vet? She seems quiet enough having her mouth etc handled....

I would be bias but definately get the EDT out first. Make sure you get a qualified EDT from BEVA so they use power equipment (as hand rasps on older horses teeth is never a good idea).

In the meantime, dont give her hay as she could colic. Give her big tub of HI fi lite (or hi fi if not laminetic) with some soaked fibre cubes and let her munch her way through that. You cant over feed her on this so dont be scarred to half/three quaters fill a tub trug.

Hopefully, she is just v sharp or has a loose tooth that needs removing. Try not to worry, I have been to horses that havent been able to eat anything and after treatment, they are eating hay again as normal!
 
Thanks for that Victoria. I have the number of a highly recommended EDT and am ringing him first thing. I've taken the grazeon away as she was spitting balls of that out too which is quite worrying as it's short and soft....she seems to be managing ok on my longer grass, unfortunately it's all down the side of my drive and around the outbuildings so I've had to do some pretty creative fencing lol and am giving her soaked high fibre cubes with speedi-beet. Should I continue this diet until the EDT can come out or change to something else?

I worry about the hifi as like I said she was struggling with the grazeon, but giving it a damned good go!
 
Ok, if she is struggling with hi fi then the best of the best is soaked grass nuts (grass....not alfalfa nuts). Again she can munch her way through it. Dont put too much speedi beet it......just use it as an appetite enhancer.

Expect to pay around £45, I am a bit of a push over and tend to still charge 45 even if I have to do a lot more work than normal. Some will be like this and some may charge more for advanced work. dont forget if it is out of EDTs area, you will have a call out.
 
Thanks for that Victoria. I shall pop up first thing for grass nuts. I just wanted a rough price so I can budget the week/empty hubbys account whilst he's not around lol! The horses have their own account only what OH doesn't realise is that 3 weeks out of 4 it's supplemented (see doubled lol) by our account lol

I'm quite worried about her actually, are these things fixable or is there a good chance that at her age it's too late?

urm, in some instances (usually for horses in v late 20s/early 30s) the only thing I can do is to remove points and make them comfortable but if thier teeth have been neglected in the past then it is usually too late to rebalance etc as it can do more harm then good.

However, most horses, once made comfortable adapt to eating short chop perfectly well and it just becomes a management issue rather than "the end of the road" .
