Afternoon all.

DD isn't overly academic...she's 14 and School have said she's struggling (she dislikes writing, is intelligent but prefers doing)

Since she's passionate about horses would looking at the bhs qualifications at her riding school help? They've offered her bronze and a volunteer award?

She wants to be a saddle fitter....

Just as an aside has she been tested for dyslexia? Met endless bright kids who struggle with writing and reading but had no idea they were dyslexic.

Thank you for replying. Has been assessed and isn't. She's an amazing reader, just struggles and has a dislike of writing for long periods

The Bronze challenge award would be a good starting point, but they're very much aimed at the basic knowledge riding school rider, and I mean super basic. She'd be better off doing her Stage 1, which if she's riding at a BHS centre, they can orgsnise for her. Doesn't have to book a specific exam anymore. The Challenge Awards (Bronze to Platinum) just break down the same stuff into much easier sections, and were introduced by the BHS as a way of making money ;)

In terms of saddle fitting quals, the BHS exams won't be needed - good for background knowledge perhaps, but not a direct requirement :)

Thanks for your reply, yes reading up it is basics. The stage one says they need to do ride safe award or BHS ride safe silver? So guessing she needs that first?

Only need the Ride Safe for the riding side, and you can do it before or after the actual ride exam for the certificate to be awarded :)

The person to ask about a saddle fitting career is @sbloom 😊

I was asked about it on here within the last month and put up a long reply, worth searching for. There is academic content in all saddle fitting course, if she can learn anatomy and biomechanics then maybe, but I still say saddle fitting is best as a second career. Lacking gravitas when faced with older customers, vets, bodyworkers, trainers all with their own opinions on saddle fitting is way more difficult than when you're older, even then it's not a career for the faint hearted.
