So we trundled off to Eland Lodge on Sunday, after an educational first run for Doyle at the 80cm at Solihull last week - tried to get a few events in before Uni exams! :(

So on Sunday I set my alarm for 3.45am and we set off at 6! Madness!
I'd walked the course the day before and thought it was tough for an 80cm (or maybe just tough for Doyle), and pondered whether we'd actually make it around at all!

We arrived in time for our 8.30am dressage, tacked up and headed over, where we had a good wander around, Doyle was very calm and kept his lid on. My instructor and I had decided that I should do his warm up first canters out of the saddle, as it loosens him up a bit and we get a better canter afterwards. Considering he was so quiet I was not expecting him to bronc across the warm up and nearly came off! Came back to a very quiet trot and worked really nicely before going in, so I thought I might have a decent dressage in the bag..

Well, we spooked at every board, the judges car, jogged through every single walk, his trot work was so stilted and he felt like a ticking time bomb! I couldn't put my leg on for fear of him exploding. :o His canter work was the calmest on the 20m circles, but he totally ruined it by doing full flying changes constantly down both long sides. ;) Came out laughing as it really was laughable, I have never ridden a dressage test that was so bad I could barely rise to the trot!

Came out to hear that Ballet had foaled back at Louella Stud, and had had a gorgeous bay colt foal. Very exciting!

Onto the SJ, I was slightly apprehensive about this, as Doyle has only really jumped 1 proper course before and this had some really short related distances and funny turns in it. Needn't have worried as he was really up for it and not so spooky like last time. In fact he was quite adjustable (for him!) and I felt he listened a lot better than before. We just had 1 down as I rode a line completely pants!

Video is here, Not sure what I'm doing in some of it.. I saw some interesting strides.

As for XC, I would have been happy if we made it around. Well he started off very green, and I had to really ride 1 and 2, got a bit onward bound for 3 and then the water at 4 shocked him a bit and he sort of ground to a halt, took my hand of the rein to give him a smack and he ducked out through that rein - V frustrating!
Did it fine 2nd time, and we were fine over the skinny at 5, after which he thought he have a bit of a nap to the horse going the other way, sort of just cantered sideways to the left. Really had to get after him and struggled with straightness to the next few, but through the water and up the big steps at 10, then the sunken road and over the carrot fence (which I thought we wouldn't even get near!).

Brakes started to fail towards the end and he was much more 'on the ball' - seems to enjoy it once he's got going.

Just a fence:

So finished with just the stop at the water, but it was a lot more forward than Solihull the week before and I felt he came away having learnt from it. Found out I got 40 for my dressage - which I think was blooming generous, as it was just terrible! Was in last place when we left, but a really educational day for Doyle and he makes me so excited for the future! Considering this time last yeah he wasn't broken, I am chuffed with him. :)

Onto Balletttttt!
She had a gorgeous colt foal by Denouce at 2am on Sunday morning - we've called him 'Squires'. :D Sorry for the overload and the size of them!
10 hours old:

So we had a lovely weekend! (Also meant I have got absolutely zero revision done! ;) )

Tea and biscuits if you got this far! :)

Awwwwwww!!!!

I seem to be surrounded by foals at the minute and overrun with foal hugs but I can't help but get emotional every time I see one!! Absolutely gorgeous!

And well done Doyle. That carrot fence is Brilliant!!!!!! :D:D

That looks a really decent 80 so you guys did great on your debut! Sounds like he has a very exciting future and my goodness - what a cute foaly!! Very well done Ballet :D

That foal is too cute!

Sounds like a really educational day out for Doyle, especially as he is such a baby. He's very smart looking though, how big is he?

He is absolutely adorable, could watch him for hours! Thank you, I certainly was not expecting anything like that when I entered! ;)

Lex: Thank you, I was really pleased with him. And very chuffed with Squires! :D

Lolo: Thank you, he measures at 16.2hh now - although I think I make him look a lot smaller! :o

What a day! love the foal:)

Well done at Eland we were there as well and thought the xc certainly had been beefed up at all the levels. Sj'ing course was a little 'interesting' as well;)

Well done, sounds like a really educational day for him! :D I read your last report too and definitely seems like he is gaining in confidence!
I'm entered for the 80cm hunter trial in a couple of weeks, have no idea how I will get my horse anywhere near that vegetable fence!! I keep having visions of me having to start kicking and smacking from about half a mile away and being done for 'misuse of the whip' or something :p
I watched the last hunter trial they did and I'm sure in the novice they were jumping the middle sized brush (2nd from last fence) however I noticed in the novice ODE this weekend wasn't you jumping the smaller one on the left which was shared with the mini? I made myself jump the bigger one schooling as I thought it looked large and I thought it would be in my hunter trial, I hope it wasn't in vain!! :p :D
Also, gorgeous foal and love the name!! :)

That is one gorgeous foal, congratulations :D

Doyle is obviously practising for more advanced dressage tests ;) sounds like a great educational day :)

Thank you, yes I was surprised by the xc and the SJ! Well done on your day, sounds like you had quite the busy day!

Viceversa: Thank you. I think he is starting to trust me too - it's certainly taken him a long time to settle at home since we had him, and I feel like we're finally sort of getting to know one another. I honestly thought we wouldn't get near the carrot fence considering how spooky he was at Solihull - luckily it is on the way home, so there is some advantage to going over it! ;)Yes, we had to jump the smaller of the brushes at the penultimate, but other than that I think the majority was different to the mini. Sure it wasn't in vain! Good luck at the hunter trials - I'd love to be able to give Doyle another run around that course! :)

LJR: Thank you! I'm itching to drive home from uni so I don't miss out on the first few days of him being at home. Alas revision calls. :(
Haha! He is very cheeky, and I'm sure it wont be the last time he thinks its funny to play about in a dressage test! At least he'll find them fun when we actually get around to teaching flying changes! :D

I do like Doyle :) The last picture of Ballet and Squires is SO cute, I love his facial markings :D

Thanks! He's bay, but he doesn't have the dark features around his eyes, ears, muzzle or black legs - I don't know if this is something that will change?! I kind of like his lightness! He is a real cutie, even at a few hours old he was trying to nibble the camera - I think he's going to be a character! :o
