Took Murphy out for a hack round one of the fields with one of the other liveries and her horse. Her horse was playing up so she decided to take her into the school, and as soon as she went out of the field Murphy went BAD!!

He was running backwards, trying to tank off, bouncing about, and then he tried to rear

Murphy does not rear!!

I put his nose to my knee but he was still bouncing about

so I got off and (I know I may get shot down for this) REALLY shouted at him and smacked him.

I walked him past the gate, and then got back on him and made him walk round the field once, then made him carry on past the gate before turning round and heading back.

I have never had to deal with anything like this before so I don't know if I did the right thing, but to me threatening to rear is very, very naughty of him

I probably shouldn't have got off but it scared me a bit

What should I have done, and what do I do to stop it happening again?

I'm a bit worried I'm going to be too scared to hack out round the fields alone now

i have done that with poppy before and felt very bad after, but i just used to totally lose my temper, but i have to say once i had given her a tellin off she would usually get on with what i asked her

(this was before we fell out lol!!)

Well done you, you got back on, unhurt and unharmed. He then did as he was told. You did the right thing, because the job was done.

you did the right thing. You finished with him doing what YOU wanted, and he will remember that.

There's nothing wrong with getting off, we all have to have a bit of self preservation. You got back ON, that's what counts.

I had a bit of a pathetic moment where I was about to cry but I was so furious with him I got back to to make him go round again!! I am just a bit annoyed with myself for getting off.

YorksG - am almost unharmed...I have a strange bruise on my arm, no idea how I got it!!

sallypops - he did get on with it after I told him off...

yeh thought he would of, sometimes they just need told where to go in my opinion lol!!! thats bad day i had with poppy after we had our wee tantrum i managed to jump her over a 2 foot straight!! sound like nothing but i was well chuffed lol!!!

i do love murphy hes so sexy

did he rear or threaten? sounds like he was being a nappy boy! I'm no expert but I'm going through this with Oscar - I was convinced he was leaving the ground but apparently not! The trick I've found is not to tense your knees, boot and growl.....

He was definitely being nappy, little monster. He didn't actually rear, just bounced a bit and felt like he might try to go up (although he is probably too fat to go up very far...). He was really trying everything to get his own way.

With hindsight I think I panicked a bit and got myself in a flap. I did shout at him quite a bit, which he doesn't like. I just need to learn to stay on, be brave and push him through it I think...

As the horse went on to do as he was asked i think you did the right thing. I generally get off when he is really naughty..have learnt that if you stay on & lose it with him he loses it back resulting in great big leaps! So I get off, rant at him a little, then get back on & start again, it usually solves the problem & we forget it happened.
