Edited version - farrier came on wednesday last week and trimmed the wee beasties feet. He warned me all 3 ponies had been trimmed quite short and might be footy for a day or two.

Went to check them on Thursday and Asti wasn't footy - poor sod couldn't walk. Brought her in and gave her a bute (had contacted boss farrier by then who said yes to giving her bute) when really I shouldn't as she's in foal.

Anyway, he came out first thing next morning and said her near fore was very badly bruised and she'd made her other three feet sore by taking her and baby-weight on three feet.

So, I've tried the padding and duck tape route, no better. Tried hoof boot - no better. Took boot off yesterday and left her with nothing overnight.

Now her off fore has blown up - from fetlock upwards, about halfway up her leg. I've cool booted her leg for 20 minutes tonight and slapped a bandage on both front legs for support - but left her out and moving - and I've re-padded and duck taped the off fore hoof and she's walking much better so I've left her out.

Thoughts - a strain from taking too much weight off the near fore sore foot?

Was going to try hot and cold hosing tomorrow see how she goes? Otherwise if nothing improves get the vet, but I'm hoping not to need him.

Have to be careful what I give her re: being in foal so not really wanting to medicate anything if I can get the swelling down easily hosing.

Poor thing! Farrier wasn't very clever taking them so short when she needs all the weight bearing surface she can. Would get some baby nappies and fold them up which will be a bit thicker. Only a short term measure though and you might just need to get the vet out....

Thats what I've done on the bruised foot - nappy and duck tape padded up so she can walk easier - which she can. Its the other fore thats blown up. seems lower than if she's strained a tendon and its filled on the outside more than the inside...

Fecking farrier!!!!!

If the foot is sore and bruised then the swelling is probably just travelling up the leg.

You need to cold hose regularly each day and you should start to see an improvement.

One of my horses sprung his shoe a few weeks ago, he bruised the sensitive laminae in the process and his lower leg swelled up. Cold hosing brought that down.

Out of interest why did your farrier need to trim so much off? maybe you need to get them trimmed with a shorter interval between each time so that they are not so bothered in the future?

What a shame! Stupid farrier!! Do be aware that her distributing her weight to avoid the really sore leg could trigger laminitis. This happened to my boy- bruised a back foot and developed laminitis in the other as he was taking all his weight on the 'good' leg. He ended up with laminitis in both back feet and mildly in front too.
Good luck, I hope it all settles down quickly.

Well, this is it, he didn't need to trim that much off. She's trimmed regularly and she shouldn't be trimmed short when she's carrying the extra weight of 9-10 months of foal. It was the young newly qualified one who came out and I just (stupidly) let him get on with it, not thinking he'd need instruction!

The "proper" farrier came and looked at her and said definately not lami.

She's walking much better this morning. She'd been spending a lot of time at the top of the field just trying not to move - but last night and today she's moving around the field a lot.

Been down and done the hot and cold treatment this morning and put support bandages back on and the swelling is down from last night.

Will persevere with hosing and hopefully we've got the worst over with.

But in all - the farrier should have known better to leave more foot ON a broody not hack it right back.
