Turned out Golden boy this morning with four shoes and smooth skin - brought him in to ride at lunch time to find he'd lost a shoe and was covered in big round lumps. Not sure the pic shows just how bad they are - they are all over one side, below the level of his fly rug on his legs and tummy. They feel quite hot to the touch. He is ridiculously sensitive skinned and comes up in lumps if a fly so much as looks at him but he'd have had to encounter a swarm to end up so bad so quickly! I'm guessing he's managed to lie in some nettles / thistles / similar - anyone any other ideas?

How would you have treated this if he was yours?

Don't know what to suggest, my lad seems to have been bitten by some soddin insect on his side while lying on his bed last night, got a right big mass of lumps on his side :mad: I have coated him in pig oil and sulpher, seems to help with the bites and the insects don't like it.
 
friend's horse came in like this tonight - all in one area too. I gave a good scratch round and they were definitely fly bites - look horrible and right in the saddle area too.

My question is, is that one humungous hungry fly, or a group of them, all picking on the same area ?
 
Emilieu you have my sympathy. My WBxTB mare is exactly the same; so sensitive. When I find mine like that (thankfully only ocassionally) I bring her in, bath her in cool Lavender Wash and keep her in for a day or so until it's settled. Not sure what mine gets into to cause the rash as she's in a fairly small, secure and safe paddock surrounded by electric fencing. Nothing at all obvious for her to roll or scratch against to irritate herself. :confused:
 
My lad came in with something similar a few weeks ago. He was happy in him self and they weren't bothering him so I decided to see what they were like then next morning. If they were any worse or causing him any distress I would have rang vets for advice. If they suggested someone come and see him then so be it. As it was they gradually went down over the following week by themselves!
 
Mine gets them all over his neck when out overnight if I don't put his fly rug on underneath his turnout. Think it's just nettle/ thistle rash. Although there are those horrid little flys that's just seem to irritate the hell out of the horses and seem to cling on to them for grim death!!!
 
He does react like this to flies, sometimes quite badly, but the pattern of them made me think he'd lain on something - just appeared along the bits of him that would be directly on the ground if you can picture what I mean?

Dizzydancer is the piriton for horses or humans? I was wondering if there was a horsey version because if it was my own skin that is the first thing I would have taken! Will need to invest in some, looks like I am going to need it! Cool lavender wash sounds like a good investment too. He has more lotions for his skin than i do, my farrier thinks it is hilarious!
 
I washed my boy in oatmeal shampoo and allow to dry then applied camomile cream this is what I have been doing with my boy who was looking similar last week but all over his belly back and neck.
