My new boy is getting gelding on thursday! im getting pretty nervous now! just hope everything goes according to plan and hes a good boy. i cant beleive in all the years ive had horses ive never stumbled across anything being gelded! so i dont really know what to expect but i certainly wont be looking i dont think!! any experiences guys ? positive thoughts :)

I fainted!

Seriously, the toolkit is medieval and I was expected to hold up the (not inconsiderable) weight of my horse's head while he was sedated and count to 100... it was all too much.

Then the vet laid them on the ground like a trophy.

The good news is that afterwards everything went smoothly and there was no infection and he did become less coltish.

My friends 14 hand cob has just been gelded, I manage to video 1 being chopped but couldn't stomach the second! The noise is the worst!
And he had the same about of sedation as a Shetland would otherwise he would of been flat out on the floor!
He was a very good boy though!:) x

You'll be fine, my 10 yr old son assisted the vet for our last one , he passed the tools whilst I was holding up a leg :p He has now decided he wants to be a vet...if he doesn't make it as a footballer. :D

Aww that's cute! I am presuming it won't take too long? Just a case of sedating him and then removing them? Does the vet dispose of them for you?

It's amazing. And makes the best noise... Crrruuuunnnnchh! Satisfying :P
We just chuck em in bin, well wrapped up. Dogs did look intrested by they are full local anaesthetic so not good for them.

The crunch noise is the best bit! I've helped with 10 castrations (3 were my own horses) and it is fine. I found it fascinating to watch. The bit where there is a bit of tugging turned a few blokes who were trying to be 'brave' very green and they scarpered!
