Effective weight gain diet plan?

I wouldn't feed anything that is cereal-based.
Soaked grassnuts with dried grass chaff and linseed oil is a very effective weight gain feed and probably the least expensive option, fed alongside ad-lib hay/lage or 24/7 grass.
I , too, would be very wary of rapid weight-gain, having taken on a mare who had been 'fed-up' too quickly, who developed lots of digestive problems.

She has slowly been gaining weight since February until now, definitely not rapid and we don't intend to rush things! (:

I agree with Wagtail.

Forage and fibre is much more important to a horse than most of the hard feeds that are out there. Their digestive system isn't created to consume most of the well-known feeds that are manufactured these days.

In addition to grazing and ad lib hay/haylage, I couldn't rate Simple System Horse feeds high enough. Check out their website for details on their 'natural' feeds - all free from cereals, pulses, mollasses, preservatives, additives, etc. They've got an excellent (non-pushy) helpline too. Unfortunately their feed too is not available in too many places either, but you can order directly from them and if you order comes to £80 plus then the P&P is free.

Your horse will absolutely love their feeds and will blossom and gain condition on it - and it's non-heating. I'll stop going on about it now - but when I picture the feed, all I see is my TB absolutely loving every last bit of food from his feed bowl and looking much better since I've started feeding him this. Yummy and good for his tummy :-D
