Effects of putting horse on 2 x bute per day

I too would use Equioxx it’s great choice for a retired horse you don’t need give it twice a day
You just press the tablet into a apple and give it once a day,
Bute really needs to be given twice to mitigate against peaks and troughs.
Equioxx really gets round the gastric issues that Bute and Bute type drugs cause .
I think it is a game changer in management of older horses .
It also costs pretty well the same as Bute .

Hoof boots are a good idea mine has scoot boots or you could make padding out of nappy and duct tape when ground hard.

Just had a thought ask farrier if with all this rain, maybe her soles are soft. I know my welsh A has gone a little footy with the rain and farrier said she has thin soles now , but never used too. You could see if she ids with hoof testers. I use Keratex hoof hardener with great results when footy.
I did try keratex for a month but it didn't seem to make her any less lame, sadly. She has Equine Fusion hoofboots and pads.

Have you tried paracetamol? I used it and reduced the amount of bute. It should have less side effects than NSAIDS.
The biggest problem is buying the amounts needed cheaply and some online pharmacies charge large amounts for what is a very cheap drug.
Is that legal though? I remember a story in the papers about the RSPCA prosecuting some poor old lady for giving her cat paracetamol when she couldn't afford the vet!

Paracetamol is a pain because you can only buy 32 at a time
That means you need to make numerous trips to different pharmacies supermarkets garages and corner shops it’s bad enough when you are a human on eight a day long term but horses need loads of tablets .

Plus it tastes bitter and can be tricky to get into them. I tried it with my much missed old boy and even in a paste with apple sauce I couldn't get it in him. He was on long term but for many years and didn't have any side effects but I think he was very lucky given the length of time he had it for.

I know they are costly but I do think ideally it is worth an MRI to see if it really is navicular we are dealing with, It could be a whole host of other problems!

I am going to be that person lol, my boy was the same, i tried injections, bute trials, rest etc. In the end took his shoes off, got some boots and he is now perfectly sound to hack. He is 18. Also changed his diet completely to very bland and non heating feeds. Bute didnt actually make a huge difference, vetrofen was useful in parts, he is now on nothing other than Boswelia and other joint supplements.
