So my lovely girl is now being tried with Egg Bar shoes to try and provide better support to her heel.

What do you think?

Also, for those of you who also use this shoe, how much do you pay per set?

Thanks

Hi Lou,

I didnt take any photos of that, but can do in the morning. It looks quite normal-

I am still unsure as to if they have been placed far enough back (Xrays initially showed 80% was infront of where it should be!)

Is that £60-80- just for the fronts (if they were eggbar)- or a set- with normal shoes on the back..... sorry just trying to be more specific! xx

PM me if you want some more personal handholding!

And if she's in eggbars because of navicular syndrom read the link I have just posted in this forum.

I personally know of at least ten navicular horses who have been saved from a bullet who are hunting, jumping and everything else. Your heart bars are a very expensive way of getting her heel bearing weight when the ground could do just as good a job AND let her foot flex.

Has your farrier the straight bar shoes? The bar is straight across the back, not curved, so if the horse overreaches, it will be less likely to rip the shoe off.
I like straight bars. The egg bars got pulled off by overreaching.

Agree with partlycloudy, we had a horse a couple of years ago, tried eggbar and even with overreach boots he pulled them off, but with the straight bar over the heel he didn't manage to pull them off, see how you go, we also found that with the straight bars so long as the toes were cut back correctly the hoof was more balanced, so many farriers these days do not cut the toes back enough and balance the hoof correctly, mine does thank god.

Mine currently has aluminium eggbars but with the fronts cut out - the toes are trimmed back, and due to the fact that the front is open, the natural wear keeps his toes short - he has not been lame, but had very poor foot confirmation when I bought him (he was a cheapie chance buy) so we wanted to do something before he started getting problems - seems to work extremly well.
We hack out regularily (although we are lucky and most is off road) and been SJ and XC with them with no problems.

Im starting to think barefoot maybe the answer with my warmblood, he has soft tissue damage in his feet and has been in bar shoes for awhile, he has improved, but i cant help thinking a bit of natural earth on his feet could be the answer.

Thanks for the link- I will have a look later when ive caught up with some work! Looks like there is a huge deal of info on it.

I am seriously considering the barefoot option- obviously i am committed for the next six weeks to see if this does help her.

There hasnt been any sudden improvement- but then I suppose she is having to adjust to moving differently with them on?

In a previous post, I had said how I was suprised how sound- and not footsore she was once the vet removed the shoe- so will definatly do some research and then ask my vet about it when he is out in three weeks time to check her.

I really dont know- they make their own shoes- so if that became an issue, then I am sure he would do.

She is not in work at the moment and isnt one for over tracking anyway- so fingers crossed she shouldnt pull them off- thanks for the suggestion though- if it should happen- it is something I can suggest xx

Daisy Chain, look at the link that cptrayes posted, there is lots of info on there about it- I havent had the chance to read through it all yet.

Its not like im wanting to go jumping her and loads of work- just want her sound again so we can keep her ticking over with little hacks (and the odd quadrille!) xx

Sol wears EggBarrs and I am 100% confident that they are one of the reasons she is sound and back in work.

I pay £68 per set (all four)

Don't think he'll travel to Essex (I'm in South Wales!)
But yes , I was paying £142 a set but swapped farriers (due to other reasons!) and nearly died of shock when he gave me the bill

I am 100% happy with her current shoeing arrangements , barefoot isn't really an option for us so I haven't got any experience with that side of things! I am just the crazy woman that takes photos of her feet at the yard

I pay £60 for fronts only. My mare has them on after being unshod didn't work for her (she has navic).

She has wedges on just now but after her next shoeing will be on flat eggbars so I am going to try these http://www.easywalkerhorseshoes.com/

I know someone who has used them with great success and also TheFarrier on here recommended them.

Thanks for the link... they look interesting- just downloading the price list...

It may be worth me boxing her to South Wales to use your farrier ISHY!! Luckily im on a yard with a friend- and we are both just as mad taking photos of things!! xx
