I am buying a full cheek bit to help with steering but can't decide whether to buy a loose ring (fulmer) or an eggbutt full cheek. I have never used a loose ring bit before, is there much of a difference?
Depends on if the horse has a preference. There is more movement in the loose ring which some horses have a different reaction to. What is your current bit like? If it is going ok, I'd try to just change one thing at a time so if you are in an eggbutt and neddy is quite happy just add the cheeks, if you change to a loose ring full cheek and it gets worse you won't know if it is because of the loose ring or the cheeks.
I agree with sticking with what you have now. Then again I loathe eggbutts, they all end up flipping well squeaking! I stick all my horses in loose rings unless they are chronic "playing with the bit"-ers.
He's currently in a D ring snaffle and doesn't play with the bit at all. He's happy with the bit but is very difficult to steer if he wants to go in the opposite direction. I don't really know if he's strong in the neck, grabbing the bit or just got a hard mouth!
mainly because the loose-ring that Brandy came with nipped her lips something awful and having instantly changed it for an eggbutt French link snaffle, I'd never go back.
I agree witht he above comments - I put Eric in an egbutt because in a loose ring he plays and fiddles with it somethign chronic, in an egbutt he takes the contact much better. But Harry and Louis are both in loose rings which suit them well because if anything that would tend to set a little
