I've always used eggbutt snaffles on my horses but I've never understood the difference between a loose ring and eggbutt. I like to play around with bits to see what they go best in but I'm not sure if it would be a pointless change to try them in a loose ring instead

Eggbuts are fixed bits so they don't move too much, great for horses who are unsure of the bit and had bad experiences. Loose rings move more in the horses mouth and obverse are not fixed great for encouraging mouthing. Some say l/r stops leaning but I don't know. Personally my mare went great in a loose ring until she chewed through it so she haf ull cheek.

loose ring delays the signal slightly from the rein to the mouth. It also stops them being able to take as much of a hold than in an eggbutt

there is a definate difference between an eggbutt & a loose ring. If you horse takes the bit forward a bit too much I'd suggest loose ring if it doesn't take it enough I'd stick with the eggbutt as that is still in the mouth & encourages them to take the bit more... I hope that makes sense when written !!
