I live in Norway and have been told by my vet that this vaccination is not available outside the USA at the moment. Are breeders in the UK being told the same thing?

There was a manufacturer shortage last year too, stocks were very low so it wouldn't surprise me.

Stocks are fine now but were low. We have high risk animals so we always get it. I asked our vet last week as we had some mares vaccinated for EHV and he confirmed it was a lot easier to get hold of now. You can't get an infoal mare into a TB stud farm round here without it being vaccinated at 5,7 and 9 months of pregnancy.

Thanks for your reply Laafet, I will ask my vet again. Out of interest, what makes your horses "high risk"?

The main risk is new horses - I used to do EHV when I had horses coming for backing and mares coming for covering! To quote Wikipedia: There is a strong correlation between the risk factors and infected horses. The main risk factors that are directly related to EHV-1 include age, confined vs pasture, higher traffic of people and horses in and out of stables, use of common equipment, training and competition, the sex of the horse, the gender and even what season it is. Horses that are stabled are more prone to EHV-1 because of stress, those in pastures have less stress. Older horses have a higher susceptibility, and during the time of winter and spring are all risk factors.[11] The horses past exposure has a huge increase in risk factor, transporting and hauling frequently also increases the risk.[7]

They are breeding stock, often from Europe, we also have horses out of training and they are all vaccinated for EHV. We follow the TBA guidelines for vaccination to keep us as safe as possible.
