I had to buy a bigger girth for my boy and the only one in his size (58 inches) was a Thoroughgood so it has elastic on the off side. Since starting using it my saddle seemed to slip to the off side (VERY annoyingley). I am not sure if its a problem with his saddle or the girth - has anyone else had this problem with these types of girth?

no not had this.if you have had to buy a bigger girth he must have got bigger and probably his saddle doesn`t fit anymore.

I haven't used one of these for a while, but had similar problems. I told my horse physio and she said that she wouldn't recomend them, as they can cause unequal pressure on the horse. As my saddle seemed to be slipping, that did make sense.

I know that Cottage Craft make their standard girths in a 58" - or used to anyway.

it is possible to get padded girths with the elastic insert in the middle, on top of the padding sleeve, so not touching the horse at all. these are far more comfortable for the horse and keep the stretch even on both sides of the horse, obviously.
a saddler told me that girths with elastic on one side only can cause the saddle to jack-knife down the horse's spine when it jumps a big jump and really lifts its shoulders and stretches the elastic, and that this can cause horses to veer to one side in midair. since i swapped to a centre-elastic girth, problem with veering horse solved... hmm.

Elastic on one side IMHO is a complete waste of time - its never going to work properly

Most of my girths are elastic, but I make sure they have it on both ends and then never get any problems. Professional choice is my current favourite.

My saddler has warned me against girths with elastic one side as there is an uneven pull on the saddle. I use a cheap thoroughgood sunthetic one that works perfectly well....It has a little give both sides....

girths with elastic are notorious for making saddles slip over. the stubben cord trvira girth is very good, i can recommend it
