Sad story, someone abandoned their aged lab (at a local to me kennels ,which was good) with a note saying it was because he hadnt learnt to be good.

Hadn't learned to be good? It was an old dog! That just doesn't make sense, unless I am missing something. I hope he finds a sympathetic, caring new home quickly.

Many years ago I saw a TV program about a Danish dog rescue. In one episode, an old Dachshund had been abandoned at/handed in to the rescue, where they quickly found massive tumours at the veterinarian examination, and he had to be euthanised. They concluded that the owners must have known, and said it wasn't the first time an owner had taken their deadly ill dog to the rescue, instead of the veterinarian for euthanasia.
As I recall, they thought it sometimes could be about money, but just as often about owners not being able to deal with the part of dog owning which involves death.
Ever since I saw that, when I hear about old dogs being abandoned, especially if they come with notes saying the dog have problems (I presume not being good can equal problems), I suspect the dog have health issues, which could be lethal.
Hopefully that isn't the case this time.

The Swale Borough Council Stray Dog Service have been investigating an elderly dog that was left abandoned on Monday. The team were able to get in contact with his owner, and all is not what it first seemed. We are now taking appropriate action based on the situation and circumstances.
We have also been in contact with members of the owners extended family, who know and love the dog. They had no knowledge of the owners plans and have asked to take the dog on so that he can live out the latter part of his life in a safe secure home, with people he knows. If home checks and the dog's reaction to them are positive, this is the kindest way forward for the dog's welfare.
We would like to thank everyone for their offers of help and a home for this old boy.

Me too. I am on a poultry group on Facebook and there are a number of hens being found dumped now. Obviously mid moult so have stopped laying or people returning to work and can't be arsed with them any more. People make me sick.
Bit on news this morning sayin g RSPCA taken in over 3000 animals abandoned due to lockdowners now wanting rid

I have just been looking at their site and am amazed at the number of dogs they have who 'need to be the only dog'! What nonsense, most dogs do better with another one to show them how to go on ime.

It is the assumption that the new owner won't try to socialise the dog that is irritating. I assume most people who want to rescue already have a dog.
No other dog, no children, no elderly, no one who ever goes out, no one with a fence less than 8' high...

They have some big dogs and say that they want people experienced with the breeds/size. Who do they think is hanging around waiting for a rescue dog to rehome, who has the necessary experience/skill but no dog currently? And who but someone retired is going to be at home all day?

All of these restrictions were one of the reasons we ended up buying a puppy. Even that is a minefield! My daughter has a rescue that had to be the only dog - which she is - but she has seperation anxiety so another dog might have been helpful. She loves coming to see my two at least once a week and being a pack member! I have a 3yo granddaughter who lives part time with us and again this was a problem for rescues. She is fully supervised all the time and is great with the dogs, the dogs are great with her and she completely adores them - they are the first thing she calls for in the morning.
